I've noticed this before but have never mentioned it until now
The GDs had HUGE feet!
Oh good -- I'm not the only one who's noticed that. I brought it up years ago. I'll have to see if I can find the post -- I believe I might have used the word "boat" to describe them :^)
Good call Tim. Bunions to be exact. Never heard about her needing a special shoe but I guess it's possible.
If you look closely at some of the tennis pictures, you'll see Anastasia's wearing sandals rather than tennis shoes. There's a dark pair that's very easy to spot -- once you see them, you'll wonder why you never noticed before -- and a light pair that's pretty hard to see against her white stockings. You have to look for the buckles. If the sandals are any indication, the problem doesn't seem to have developed until around 1913-14.
Apologies for quoting a 2 year old post, but I figured it's relevant.
I was lucky enough to visit Catherine Palace in June and a pair of Anastasia's shoes were on display (if, with my limited Russian knowledge, I've read the caption correctly). It was impossible to avoid the reflections on the glass as it was very crowded and I had a limited angle to work with - sorry.
I was struck by how large they were. It's difficult to get a sense of it from the photo but I am quite sure I could've easily fit into these shoes, and these were from 1909!
Here is the accompanying caption. It's somewhat blurry so I don't know if anyone will be able to decipher it, but obviously, the title says "Children's shoes" and (I think?) Anastasia's name is there.
