Grand Duchess Anastasia with her mother, Alexandra and two nurses when Anastasia had diphtheria. 1907.

Anastasia either has her hair up or has it cut, maybe because the medicine made it fall out?

Yep. Luckily Alexandra noticed it rather early and quickly and was able to contain it so it didn't effect Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Alexei. Her early experiences with the disease sure came in handy when it hit her household.

That picture must have been taken when Anastasia had recovered.

My mother had diphtheria in 1941 and the treatment then involved complete isolation and six weeks in bed, forbidden to do anything. Even her parents were not allowed to visit!

Do you think Anastasia's diphtheria had anything to do with her short stature?  Some illnesses can permanently stunt growth like that.

I don't know whether diphtheria is known for that.

My mother had it when she was 11 and was 5ft 5. She had a tall mother (5ft 9) and a 5ft 7 father, plus one tall brother and two fairly average ones (she was the only girl).

I’m not sure I ever knew of Anastasia diphtheria either. Do we know what year and month/s the illness would have occurred and who the source of this is?

I always find it interesting how the imperial family seem to be able to downplay most of their stints with illness. You hear little to nothing about what are sometimes fairly serious illnesses in letters or diary entries yet they seemed rather common. Of course some of this cageyness or reluctance to speak of their illness makes sense given Alexei’s grave condition. I suppose the Romanov were trained at lying about health as a subject.

Serious illness was far more common then. People didn't discuss it as much for the same reasons we don't talk about having the flu.

Anastasia Nikolaevna by Kaulbach. I believe this is the picture we have been hunting for years, the one that was on display in Maple room of AP.

It's also a black and white drawing though not colored like Olga, Tatiana or Maria's are, unless they were colored 'recently' and not by Kaulbach.
