Lucky for us Tatiana was so detail oriented!
Indeed. Her list making is an interesting illustration of how she thought....and as Gibbs said , while she had decided opinions,  it was hard to know her thoughts .... an  interesting distinction.  TN approached things differently. What amazes me about OTMA was how diffrent they were from each other ( as many attest to)...and how their diffrent talents and  abilities were needed by the family as a whole . I really don't think the family would have wreathed captivity as well as they did without the  diffrent talents and strengths all the girls brought to the situation....along with the family devotion felt by all of course.

But exactitude was important to TN ....probably why she excelled at nursing. I was just reading a story about her as a 2 year old in" Six years at the Russian Court." M. Eager was dressing the girls to receive Maria Pavlovna  the younger and her brother Dimity. OT had gone to their house the week before. As Eager got her ready, TN kept saying " Hurry! I MUST be at the top of the staris when they arrive!!"  It seems she was greeted by them in this way and she felt it must be the RIGHT way and she was most anxious to do it 'right"...so we  see she was born with this trait.

What is interesting about letters is we often write to the other person  what we ourselves would want to know. Of course TN would want to know who picked which bag  lol!

The Tsar and Imp in Finland. Seems to me they are seeing how the ride wintered over...
don't know the year. 1911-12 I would think . I'm sure many on the forum can date it =)

I think i had already seen it - i guess 1912, it seems like other pics taken in 1912, Nicholas has the same white uniform.
It reminds me of this, that according to Kurth (in The lost world) was taken in 1912:
(sorry for bad quality, it's the only one i have apart from the book i haven't scanned).

I agree -- it is 1912, n Finland. How about June? The IF had routine to sail to the Finland in June in a year,  correct?

I'd say early July - in 1914 when president PoincarĂ© visited his ally Nicholas before the war broke out, the IF was on the Standart and there received the President (i'm referring to Ambassador Paleologue's book; also Sarushka in her novel writes about it in the very first chapters). WWI was declared, if i remember well, about 28th July NS or so. I remember Nicholas' declaration to germany was on 1st August NS, so on 19th July for Julian Calendar.
Moreover, i remember they had a party for Maria Fedorovna's name day on the Standart, look here:

Maria's ND in Orthodox Calendar is 22 July (4th august NS). So a bit later than June, i'd say...

oops that's not the Standart...one knows because of the railings. They are open and the Standart's railing is closed( to keep the little ones from falling over board!)...Maria Fedorovna took over the Polar Star after NII and family had moved on to the Standart and the Polar Star is  where the famous dancing footage and this photo was  taken  on Maria Fedorovna's name day . I once asked Douglas  AP member and royal yacht expert , why was the dancing on the Polar Star?  Was it bigger? His answer was Maria Fedorovna  liked dancing and wanted to encourage the girls to dance more

The Imperial family begin her trip to Finland at the end of June 1912 (aproximately 20 June, if I am not wrong). They went back home to Peterhof the 6 August 1912. So the picture was probably taken in July, like a lot of similar picture of this year from the Beinecke Library.

This may have already been discussed somewhere, but can I ask is her foot out of it's shoe here: http://nd01.jxs.cz/843/550/ea25db4261_44824183_o2.jpg ? I know that she suffered from hallux valgus, would this have caused it? Also seen here: http://nd01.jxs.cz/280/051/e59dd3f910_44824171_o2.jpg and here: http://nd01.jxs.cz/948/953/91aa8a2efb_44807584_o2.jpg

Nope, it's just an illusion created by stockings and the embellishment on the shoe itself.

There's a photo of Anastasia on the beach at Livadia that shows her bunion quite clearly. Also, in some tennis court photos she's the only one wearing sandals instead of tennis shoes -- likely because of the bunion.

Here's the photo Sarah mentioned.

I'd never even thought of that explanation for Anastasia's sandals at the tennis court, nor had I even noticed that she was the only one in them. It makes sense, though.

It seems to me here she's just having fun, trying to slipping off her shoe. She's so little! (If i remember well this pic was taken after Al's birth so she was just 3!)

Yeah I agree, and I love this photo! The minor drawback is that Tatiana looks a little out of focus, or perhaps she was moving around a little too much and sunsequently caused some of that smear effect we often see with older photographs taken by cameras with longer exposure times.

But it's more than made up for by how beautiful and happy the all look. Rare to see all four with side big smiles on their face all at once in a posed photograph! If it was in fact taken shortly after Alexei's birth those smiles make even more sense...as it was surely a very happy time for the family!
Once in a while you get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right...

I have wondered if this was taken at the same time

Indeed. I  wonder if the photographer ( or a parent) did something silly to make them smile in unison=)
