I'm sure I've seen that Anecdote somewhere and read it was true...but I cannot quite remember where I read it was true...

Tatiana Z  posted a bunch of new to me photos on the rare photo thread of the family in 1913-1914...and then  Laura
put them on this easier site.  Totally fab, run don't walk over there in the Having Fun section

But this one I had to put here to point out that  it seems to me Alix is asking Imp how did she get a stain on her out fit already?
Imp is trying to think of something and everyone else is laughing...or trying not to. Amazing

It's amazing how much we learn about this family from pictures alone. Sure we know tons about them from letters and diaries and first hand accounts but a photograph like this provides a perfect account of the family dynamic without saying a word. The Empress asking her darling Imp to explain herself while her two eldest sisters listen in with curiosity. Sweet Marie just stares ahead, gazing and smiling at the camera, for she has seen this act played out before. So too has the Tsar who is content to light his cigarette and pay it little mind.

Breathtaking photo. One of the best I've ever seen! Thanks again to Tatiana Z for revealing it to us!

I saw this and I wondered if the story was true, as I don't recall ever reading the anecdote. Does anyone know if it is true?

It's from volume 2 of Spiridovitch's memoirs.

I'm not sure the way it's told on this website is quite true however. From my understanding the hike that took place involved only Anastasia, not her siblings.

She was convinced that she could keep up with the men and her father and wanted to prove herself. Nicholas reluctantly agreed to let her join in but made no concessions. After a while she began to get tired and fall behind, then started to cry. Knowing they couldn't simply leave her behind the other officers took turns carrying her. By the end of the hike the men were sweating heavily and extremely exhausted...even more so the one's who had the unenviable chore of carrying the Imp.

That's correct.

I hope so. I've already written a little "scene" about it :-)

Havens above ! imagine being on a hike book ended by  the Tsar and an overly ambitious Imp?
The first  could walk forever, the other needed to be carried! Tired indeed!

matushka, I believe I remember that now!
I'm hoping to see  a clear copy of this one some day ,
which seems from the same time

Love that one. It looks, here and in other pictures, like Maria was a little taller than Olga.

Yaeh, Maria and Tatiana ended up being quite tall didn't they? Imp was short, Olga average.

Love that pic, wish we had a HQ version of it!

Fantastic Neeosine!

I love the one of her in the middle of the officers. Yes the photo is cropped, but it looks so delightfully silly seeing her stand out like that in a sea of men in uniform. Was that by any chance her regiment?

I am 99.9 percent sure the picture is her with her regiment (148th Caspian Infantry.) The caps and epaulettes look alike to this one:

The girls in the photo re Olga and Tatiana and the photo was taken in December of 1913. It's Anastasia's regiment.
