At this time, fathers learned to their children how to smoke

Tsar Nicholas II jokingly allows his daughter, the Grand Duchess Anastasia, to smoke.

Actually Nicholas allowed his daughters to smoke; giving them cigarettes which they said were gifts, and would smoke them happily. I think there's a picture of Olga smoking too. But yeah, they didn't smoke them jokingly. Maybe for this picture, as Anastasia may have been a bit too young for the time, but I don't think Nicholas is letting her jokingly allow her to smoke in this picture.

There are some photos from 1915/16 with the girls lying in a bale of hay and one of them (Anastasia I think) was smoking. I don't think anyone yet understood the health risks that smoking presented back at that time.

I think that's the picture I mentioned of Olga smoking but no, they didn't know.

There is a picture somewhere in this forum of Olga sitting on a canal embankment across from Children's Island, smoking a cigarette.  (I think Anastasia is with her.)

I wonder if there exists a photo of Alexandra smoking.  That she did is certain; Anna Vyrubova wrote, "During the war, the Empress smoked cigarettes to calm her nerves..."  T'would be interesting to see a photo of her actually doing so.

I have no idea what Anastasia is doing or pointing at, but her continuous head tilts look like she's trying to interrogate the woman in front of her.

Livadia possibly? Most likely lady-in-waitings to Alexandra, but I just noticed the look the other lady gives each other after Anastasia begins grilling the lady in front of her. It's the look two people give each other when they see 'drama' or an argument that includes an insult that is hilarious but you can't burst out laughing in front of them, so you give each other a look then look or move away to stifle a laugh.

I've never been able to look at the above photo without a shudder.  Smoking while laying in a haystack seems awfully dangerous.

Yeah, that's not really the best idea. Especially when you're sleeping/napping.

Great find Ally! Any way of knowing whether this was part of a full session of photos?

Around 1905 I’m guessing?

Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia and a few soldiers picking flowers for White Flower Day near a Water Tower (which is still there today), Crimea, March 1914.
