I think that it is always great to see new photos, and I also like to add some date, place and little story about it. (If possible)

Date : October 5th, 1916
Place: Stavka, at Mogilev.
From Alexei's point of view: The deputies of the 1st Volga- Tersko Cossacks troops came. I put on the uniform which was presented to me, and I was photographed with the group.

(You will notice that all of the four GD's were also photographed at the same balcony - there are photos of them wearing white dresses and the hats)

Now that there is a high quality version of this photo, does anyone else think it looks like Alexei might have bruises on his legs?

He does. Aleksei also mentions visiting two curative mud-baths on the Black Sea coast in May of 1916, when at Evpatoria.

Is it safe to presume this was taken after the abdication? If so, it contradicts Vyrubova's story about Derevenko's betrayal — Anna V. was long gone by the time the children were well enough to go outside and help break up the ice.

Important observation there Sarushka. I have long been of the opinion that Vyrubova's claim of Derevenko's betrayal as one of pure rubbish. The question then is when in 1917 was this picture taken.

I believe Nicholas spent most of January and sizable portion of February in Tsarskoe Selo, yes? He didn't travel back to Stavka until the latter portion of February if memory serves. This photo could easily have been taken prior to then which means it's before abdication and also before the children were ill.

I remembered that a low quality version of this photo was discussed before and found the thread. nena posted very interesting information there:

Nicholas II' diary, April 1st, Saturday (Old Style):

'' ...During the day, we began breaking the ice near the bridge; Tatiana, Valya and Nagorny worked..." He mentioned breaking the ice almost the whole April. So the official begining of breaking the ice would be April 1st 1917, since he wrote 'today we began breaking the ice...'. The word 'ice' (Russian: led) is also mentioned on 3rd, 4th, 6th, 9th 23rd and 24th April. I found  the Tsar's entry on Anna Vyrubova's arrest , it is 21 March and he afterwards mentions breaking the ice for the first time, on April 1st.

The name 'Derevenko' is mentioned only twice, in August and September and is reffered to the surgeon Vladimir Nikolaevich Derevenko and his son Kolya.

Also, we should believe that breaking the ice hadn't begun before April 1st. So, the photo was taken after 21 March (OS).

The snow has already melted from the higher ground in the photo. Whatever happened to Derevenko, this looks like evidence that he was still with the deposed imperial family in April.

But he stayed in contact with the teachers and was waiting for the time he could go to Tobolsk. When I will find time I will try to find more precise information.

I have no doubt that you are correct. It's good to have visual confirmation as well.

The information is done without any analysis, one thing after another, but there are interesting points. I read an article about Derevenko, a few years ago and the most precise parts of the wikipedia page come from this article.
After all, it is possible Derevenko's behaviour was not excellent after the revolution. But he stayed with the family and was appointed to the tsarevitch, that's a fact.

Is the second sailor on the picture K. Nagorny? And the boy? Derevenko's older son Alexei, or Kolya Derevenko (the doctor's son)?
