Thanks for posting those cards!

A question - did the tsars (I have the latter ones particularly in mind) actually lead their forces out,in person, to battle?

You have just helped me so much by posting those pictures! Whenever I read about the IF, and find that so-and-so is mentioned in the context of the various regiments, I like to do my own visuals. I couldn't quite get them 'right, ' lacking as I was all the details of  the uniforms. Thanks so much - now the picture is complete!

Here is the only colour postcard I have seen : Olga reviewing her Own Elizavetgradsky Hussars, not before it left for the Front as it claims, but at a review held at Peterhof in August 1913 :

Their tunic was somewhat darker blue than shown here and her skirt should be red-brown.

There are some black and white postcards showing Olga and Tatiana in their uniform.

Constantinople, if you are talking about exclusively Regiments (Cavalry and Infantry), and not mention other military formations, then, as I remember Nicholas II officially was the chief of ten Rifle/Infantry Regiments and seven Cavalry Regiments (including HIM Convoy consisted of Terek and Kuban Cossacs). All in all it would be 17 Regiments, so Nicholas II had a lot of different beautiful uniforms;).

P.S. As I remember the chief of Guard's Naval Crew (all the Guard's ships including Standart, Oleg, Polar Star, Tsarevna and so on) was officially Marie Feodorovna.

I thought I saw somewhere that he was colonel of 35 regiments but I may be mistaken.

Yes, you are slightly mistaken;).

If we talk about all the military formations (not only about Regiments), then we would also have not 35. Altogether Nicholas II was the chief of 16 (17) Regiments, 3 military academies (Pavlovsk military school, Alexander military school and 1st Cadet Corps), 2 Batteries of Guard's Horse Artillery, 1st Artillery Brigade and Guard's Sapper battalion (or simply military engineers). If we make simple calculations, we will have 23 Military Formations and Institutions.
