I do like the idea that an seldom seen older jewelry piece might reappear (or be re-worked) to mark the occasion.  It is a diamond jubilee after all - there ought to be some diamonds involved somewhere.

Yes indeed, I was thinking hat maybe some diamonds etc might be reset from H.M.'s existing collection for the jubilee. Perhaps to give a new look to a piece she already uses on a regular basis. Maybe as I said in my earlier post, diamond drops for the Vladimir tiara - I feel sure there are some languishing in the vault somewhere. Given the current economic, climate I was certainly not suggesting the acquisition of new gems.

Resetting existing diamonds sounds the ideal solution, and very much in keeping with the Queen's habit of getting her clothes remodelled for further use.

Given our change of Government following May 6th plans may change they've just slashed 27 million from the Olympic Delivery Authority budget!! However the already additional public holiday is likely to remain (we will get Monday and Tuesday 4th and 5 th June off work) as will the Diamond Jubilee Medal which presumably will go to specific people who've done some service for the nation (I hope that it will recognise community contribution which would fit with the new Governments half baked big society idea). The additional public holiday only applies in England and Wales as it is a devolved power in Scotland and Northern Ireland although they will probably opt for the same day in the end.
I can't see huge state visits to her other countries in the Commonwealth as the Palace has already indicated that these things will be increasingly passed to Charles (and in time William) due to the Queen's age. I wouldn't rule out a low key celebration if for example the Queen becomes unwell or if Prince Philip becomes unwell.

Assuming all remains well with THe Queen then I suspect major events over the first weekend in June (similar to the Golden Jubilee) and a series of public events in the following months up to the opening ceremony of the Olympics.

Pity the article fails to mention that the royal connection with playing fields goes back further than the Duke of Edinburgh. The national memorial to George V in the late 1930s took the form of creating playing fields, so many towns have  King George V Playing Fields.

Also there's a Cecil Beaton collection opening from Feb-April with some never before seen images of the Queen to mark her jubilee along with a-first-time-ever show of her diamonds at Buckingham Palace in the summer so excited to be going to all of this!!

Visited this expo yesterday at the Ulster Museum in Belfast.  It is very good with some wonderful images.  The Leibovitz portrait is stunning as are the holographic images commisioned by the Channel Islands.  A bit disappointed by the absence of Annigoni´s wonderful early portrait of the Queen in Admiral´s cape ... his later portrait of HM in robes of the Order of the Bath is included however, but isn´t nearly as beautiful.  This expo is touring the country at present and well worth a visit.

Several of the British papers have recently carried stories about one minister (an ardent monarchist, apparently) who has proposed that a new royal yacht be presented to the Queen to mark the jubilee.  The Prime Minister has firmly rejected the idea, given austerity measures in place around the globe, but then I read elsewhere that there might be a public drive to raise funds to build such a yacht.  I, for one, would be quite happy to contribute a small donation to such an effort, if it's true.  Do any of my fellow posters across the pond have any more current insight into this idea?

It's a nice idea but why not recommision the Britannia and save ourselves 60 million pounds. I suppose even this would not keep the republicans happy but hey, ....... what will.

WITH WORDS INCLUDING- Parasites, sycophants, waste of money, pensioners dying in the cold etc ......you get the picture ? The peasants are most certainly revolting.

I was thinking of writing a strongly worded letter to "man of the people" Mr Blair for taking away HM's yacht, unfortunately I'm unaware as to which of his mansions he is staying in at the moment.  On a more serious note, I still believe a recommisioned Britannia to be a cheaper & better option. Whatever the outcome new ship or not, it will be all too late for the diamond jubilee celebrations.

Can you blame them being not amused? The Britons don´t live in luxury and many struggle and then someone like this guy wants to give HM a present like this. It´s so hilarious, she is the richest woman in the world, if she needs a ship then buy one. And maybe the tax payers don´t have to give a penny for this ship, but it´s just so tacky in this times.
