H.M. The Queen is not the richest woman (I prefer to say Lady when referring to the Queen) in the world.

I also think it is worth looking at the bigger picture when considering these issues not the rabid comments of some Daily Mail readers.  Had that pack of champagne socialists and "class warriors" with 2 jaguars and several mansions each which were the New Labour Government looked at the bigger picture Britannia would not have been decommissioned - Blair himself now says he regrets having followed through on this issue first raised by Major´s government.  Britannia meant prestige, pioneering - a floating embassy of all that was best of Britain - it would be great to see her back on the seas.  If this isn´t possible then a new yacht should be provided for, and yes, it should be a gift as a thank you to The Queen for 6 decades of service.  The problem is too few of today´s populace know what duty, devotion and love of country mean to "get" what The Queen is about and why she merits this.  It should be funded by the people and not a floating bill board for companies and investors.

Whatever one thinks of the yacht business, I think commemorating the Gracious Lady's SIXTY YEARS of hard work and dutiful devotion to Britain and the Commonwealth cannot be regarded as fawning.  It is a celebration for the people too, not just for HM.  Can you name one other person who has given their life in service to the extent she has?

Hear Hear!!The Brittania should be put back in full service instead of a new yacht.Brittania was very much a home to HM and the RF,
a floating embassy indeed as you say,+ plus the home they themselves felt happiest on many occasions.
Decommisioning the yacht was just tactics to gain votes by tony ballony, there wasn't any need given the heaps of cash that went
all the wrong ways to sickening political correct bs during his government.Nouveau socialist plebs that it was and still is. Bah,and now tony
regrets..Again,just a remark to get the sympathy of the vox populi...cheap trash as that often is as we all can watch on the telly...?
My foot..he doesn't give a whatever..dispicable little critter....Grin..if HM would have appreciated him he would have been a
Lord by now,all his predecessors are,Lords Ladies & Sirs, not him....nor that bitchy over the top nonsense two-legged creature he is
punished to call his wife...

In short.Get the Brittannia on the seas again, nothing less, with all the trimmings!

As I said, unfortunately many don´t "get" what the Queen is about, nor do they understand what 60 + years of public service means...

True, many can't imagine even halve that time in service to the larger community,or any service anywhere at all.... ::)

Truly an examplary Lady, where others hate to grow old yet can't wait till they can retire..,she moves on un-altered and
true to her promiss of dedicating her life to her Country & Commonwealth.Admirable & "old school".

I think Queen Elizabeth II was extraordinarily lucky to be born with the sort of personality she has, as this has been a major factor in allowing her to carry out her duties so admirably. If she had been more like her Uncle David, or even her sister Margaret, for instance, the British Royal Family might not have survived into the 21st century.

I realise that a lot of it is due to her own efforts and a huge amount of hard work, but if she had not been born the sort of person she is she could not have done it.

Just imagine some of her relatives in the position, like Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, who broke down in tears when his father died as he didn't want to be Tsar, and had no idea how to do it. Or QEII's ggg Aunt, Victoria, Empress of Germany, who was extremely clever, very politically minded, and was so disastrously unaware of other people's feelings that even her friends said that she was her own worst enemy.  Or Victoria's son, Kaiser Wilhelm II, who brought Germany to its utter ruin, and helped cause the First World War.

Her father George VI didn't want the position either, and he is said to have sobbed on his mother's shoulder when his elder brother abdicated, but he did the best he could, despite having the wrong sort of temperament to do it at all easily, and it brought him to an early death.

Instead, Elizabeth II has remained as Queen of various realms (presently 16 in number, with a different title in each one) for nearly 60 years now, and she is widely respected and admired. I don't expect that she enjoys all aspects of her job (very few people do, after all) but she has had the ability to cope with the things she doesn't like, without any apparent strain. That might take a lot of effort on her part, of course, but if so she doesn't let it show.

I find some of the fawning on this thread a little nauseating, but that's purely my own personal reaction. I admire Queen Elizabeth a great deal, not so much for her 60 years of Service, as for her 60 years of EFFECTIVE Service to her country.  I don't think the British Royal Family would have survived this long without her contribution, though of course that might or might not be a good thing.

As with most things, history will ultimately reveal the answer, and the next decade or two will answer your last question DNAgenie.

If, after the death of HM and the succession of Charles, public support for the monarchy (in the UK and other realms) fades and the institutions break apart and end,  the only conclusion can be that it was the present Queen alone who kept it all together - herself, personally.

If - on the other hand - the monarchy remains respected and maintained in Britain and Commonwealth into the reign of Charles - and later William - then I would conclude that it was the institution of monarchy itself which self-sustained.  By that I don't mean to infer that the Queen isn't due credit for her great achievements, but it would mean that it was not her personality and dedication to duty alone which kept the Crown alive.

The old royal yacht has been completely modified into a museum.  There is  an entire industry at Leith that relies on the yacht for income as a tourist attraction.  The city has a legal hold on the yacht and intends to keep it.  Its days as a Crown property are over.

If HM needs a yacht there are dozens of gorgeous new ones available for lease or sale.

You are correct Douglas, I sadly have to concede that Britannia's days as a royal yacht are now over, the only upside is we may now all visit her at Leith docks. This year the Britannia and the jubilee water pageant are most certainly on my list of things to see.

The last I heard, she was in dry dock for repairs and cleaning. Is she out now then ?
In 1983, when the Quuen visited California,  we produced a commemorative plate featuring the yacht, which, in the end, she did not use because it was too stormy at that time. Still have some of those plates.
