Pictures of Tatiana I
brielle14:
:) I keep hearing that GD Tatiana was incredibly beautiful, but from the pictures that I've seen I'm not particularly convinced. Does anyone have some good pictures of Tatiana, preferably in color?

Lanie, very nice . . . almost startling! (Something of the same feeling I had when I visited Russia and, after years of looking at black-and-white photos, was now amazed that everything around me was in color!) ;)
Most of us, I think, have known (or known of) "Tatianas" who, by virtue of their height, slender build, poise and attitude, convey a beauty going beyond their basic physical attractiveness. (For me this would include Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Katharine Hepburn, and Princess Diana.) This type of woman is a perfect "clothes horse" who would conceivably look attractive in anything, sackcloth included!
Tatiana's features may not be as classically pretty as Marie's, but still she has "that special something"--if I knew how to spell the French phrase, I would!--that denotes elegance, grace and style. Or, as I remember Sophia Loren's features once being described . . . feature by feature, everything seems wrong, but taken as a whole, it adds up to an incredibly intriguing face! :)

My favorite photo of Tatiana which shows her beauty is from the same series of the photo Lanie gave. It is the perfect profile of her... very cameo-like.
Without looking through all my bookmarks on my computer, here's the first one I came across:
http://www.angelfire.com/biz5/romanovs/album5.html ... it's on the bottom row.
And there are a number of photographs on this page with Tatiana in them, and in color. The last one in particular is my favorite. Tatiana is the one on the far right. Others show her great posture and beauty.

It's also good to note that during a span of time, Tatiana wore a wig because she got sick and had her hair cut very very short. Had she never been sick and lost her hair, I personally think a lot of her pictures would have turned out a lot different.

All the photographs of the IF were touched up(hope it´s the correct word), even the family photos and those taken while in captivity in Tsarskoe. The photographers did it following the tastes of the time. Grand Duchess Tatiana, with her dark brown hair, golden eyes snowy complexion and aristocratic features, was extremelly beautiful, but it was an exotic and modern beauty for her time.
Therefore she "suffered" from this common practice. I´ve seen it especially in the formal portraits taken in 1914. Her characteristic nose was altered to look straight. I have some of those photocards and have seen three different versions of her profile portrait.
Necks, chins, noses, waists...were commonly altered(with different levels of success). Of course these photographers-painters were real artists and many times obtained through this practice a better and more artistic composition.
Tatiana was even thinner than the official photographs show.

Doesn't anyone out there think that Olga was the prettiest of the sisters? Or at least just equally as gorgeous as Tatiana? To me Olga definitely is the most beautiful and could be a model today. I don't know how to link pictures here, but there is this one stunning picture of her on the glintofgold.org website. I think it's one of the ones taken for the 1914 series, and she is alone in the picture with her head seeming to sort of lean into the camera. Of course there are numerous other photos where Olga looks quite beautiful. Especially when she has her hair in the long style. Someone said that the pictures were touched up and that Tatiana was actually thinner than the formal photos depicted her. Was this true of Olga too? I know she was supposed to be quite slim. Honk if you love Olga!!!! lol : )
