I know what you mean. I would guess that it's just a trick of the lighting. These photos were made into postcards to distribute widely, so I doubt the IF would have settled for anything blatantly unflattering in the way of portraits.

I've always wondered about that, Emily. I think theres a possibility that maybe she spilled something on her dress or got it dirty or something.
