I know what you mean. I would guess that it's just a trick of the lighting. These photos were made into postcards to distribute widely, so I doubt the IF would have settled for anything blatantly unflattering in the way of portraits.

I've always wondered about that, Emily. I think theres a possibility that maybe she spilled something on her dress or got it dirty or something. ???

maybe she just didn't go out with them, but rather stay with her mother and her needlework so that there was no need for her to dress up.
