Maria Romanov - The Forgotten Child
« on: December 11, 2004, 05:31:24 AM »
I am currently researching Maria Romanov to write a script on her short but interesting life. If you can help with the research by telling me as much as possible I'd be extermely grateful.

I wouldn't say Maria Nikolaevna was forgotten.

What sort of things do you want to know?

No not at all but she is the one child that was least talked about. Tatiana for her beauty, Alexi for almost becoming king, ANastasia for not being found(ditto with Alexi) and Olga for her breakdown.

Extracts from some of her letters can be found on the main Alexander Palace website, located here:
http://www.alexanderpalace.org/palace/mdiaries.html

You can also find information about her in books like Nicholas & Alexandra by Robert Massie and the online books on this website. As well as of course on this forum. There is a nice online bio of her with pictures here:

I agree with you that she does tend to be the one sister who is most overlooked and least talked about. Olga and Tatiana were better known even by their own contemporaries because they were the eldest, and were out more in society. Maria and Anastasia were lesser known in their time because they were so young, but after their deaths of course Anastasia got a lot of press due to the claimants. So Maria is the one left out of the limelight so to speak.

Note--those online bios are pretty much plagarized from various sources.  Basically takes the same wording from various books, including Gilliard, etc.  I didn't notice that until recently and now it drives me nuts.

All the children had diaries; in a fit of anxiety in 1918 Maria and Anastasia burned their 1917-18 diaries in Tobolsk in the oven, alas!
