Tsareubiitsa: The Assassin of the Tsar - Malcolm McDowell
« on: December 21, 2004, 09:22:08 PM »
Two movies about the last days are Ventsenosnaia Sem'ia, and Tsareubeitsa. The former is very moving, the second very stark. Both are Russian.

The Russian part would explain why I can't google them. Is there any way I could get them where I live, or do you know?

Stark in that it was grim. It didn't have the emotional hold over you like ventsenosnaya does, but still very interesting nevertheless. It's about a man in a mental asylum who thinks he was the assasin of the Tsar. Part of it is set nowadays, the second part mainly in Ekaterinburg, showing the last few days of the Tsar and his family.
Dandywell, www.RbcMp3.com is one of many sites where you can get Russian videos or DVDs. Try googling russian dvd. The movies are both in Russian, and so far as I know there are no subtitled versions.

The title should be Tsareubiitsa.

I found it by googling your discription, and the English version is called Assassin of the Tsar, with the foreign title Tsareubijtsa. Here's a link to see the English version's cover: http://www.geocities.com/malcolmtribute/images/assassin-video.jpg
And here's site with alot about it: http://www.geocities.com/malcolmtribute/assassin.html
Thanks! :)

Assassin of the Tsar is not a new movie- it's made somewhere in 1990 or earlier.

Anna is right, it was made around the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Is there a thread about that movie at all?

Yes, it was. In fact, it got some kind of award in 1991.

Sarai,

You're welcome. Yes, I do so want to lay hands on this film. As far as I know it's not released in Europa or the US. I frequently searched the web, no results :-/

 :)
You can check out the "Assasin of the Tsar" by
accessing the "IMDb" webpage (Independent Movie Data Base) - it has all the specs on the film and reviews, etc.

I haven't tried to purchase it yet, but I'm definitely going to - Malcolm McDowell is such an excellent actor when he has the material to work with - and this certainly fits that criteria!  :)

Oh, and off-topic (somewhat) - I found "Russian Ark" at my library's DVD's for rent!  It is out, but it is only $1.00
for 7 days - I love my library!!  Can't wait to see it also.

I don't think there is a thread posted about this film, so I'll begin one.  This is a little-known movie starring the British actor Malcolm McDowall as a man who is a patient in a mental asylum (at the time the film was made, 1991), who thinks that he is the murderer of both Nicholas II and his family, as well as Alexander II, reincarnated.  His doctor, attempting to bring him back to reality, finds himself slipping back into his patient's mind and the events of the summer of 1918 in Russia.  In his hope to cure the man of his mental disorder, he discovers some surprising facts.

I should forewarn you that this movie is hard to find.  I was able to find it at a local video store, but when I look in most Movie, Video or DVD guides, it is not mentioned in most of them.  I haven't checked yet if it is available online.  It is available either in Russian with English subtitles, or dubbed.

What I liked about it was the sensitive portrayal of the Imperial Family, and how the actress who portrayed OTMA (particularily the ones who played Olga and Tatiana) quite closely resembled them.  But again, the girls were not given much to do.  The director of this movie is Karen Shakhnazara, and the Russian title of it is "Tsareubjtsa".  If  anyone has anymore info as to whether it is available online, or has feedback or suggestions, feel free to reply!!!!!

Colleen, I saw this movie and I should even have it somewhere among my VHS collection! I didn't think anyone else would have heard of this film since it is in Russian. For some reason I can't remember that much about the movie as I saw it several years ago, but I will look for the tape and maybe watch it again. I forgot I had it, thanks for reminding me!  ;)
Helen

P.S. The literal translation of "Tsareubiytza" is actually "The regicide" or even more precisely "Murderer of Tsar"...  :)

Thanks, Helen!!!  I have been trying to find it - I'll have to see if it can be ordered online.  It was an interesting film.  Another good one is called "Burnt By The Sun" and it takes place during the Stalinist regime.  I'm glad I reminded you that you have the movie in your collection, and thanks for the extra info!!!!
