Three days before her 75th birthday thuis thursday january 31st,
HM will announce Her Abdication in a speech for National TV.

Sad to hear she abdicates, she's done an outstanding job.
Am fully confident that Alexander and Máxima will do a perfect job too

Just been confirmed. She's abdicating. I'm sure Alexander and and Maxima will do a great job, like she has done. He will become King on April 30th. The country's first king since 1890. Reason is said to be 'country needs new generation'. Here is the speech in English:

ofcourse it is confirmed....I am Dutch, and i watched it.t was the announcement about 17.00PM here today that there will be/would be a special announcement by HM this evening.HM stated she felt she wished to abdicate several times over the past years, but now,in the year we celebrate the 200th anniversery of the Kingdom of The Netherlands, she felt it was the right time to handover the Throne.

She feels it is time for a new generation. That is soo refreshing....SHE feels..Not that we NEED it...

All still think it came unexpected and am soprry to see her abdicate but understand her fully.
We also have great confidence in the futere with her son and Heir HM King Willem IV Alexander and Queen Máxima.

This is also the anniversary of a giant, deadly storm that hit the Netherlands in the 1950s.  Queen Juliana visited many of the heavily affected area, helping survivors with food and clothing relief.  While it helped establish her mother's reputation as a capable and caring monarch, I'll bet Beatrix felt awful to share her birthday with the anniversary of such a terrible event.

At the time the then 15 year old Princess did visit the hit area too and she,and her sisters, were hostess to children of the disaster area
at Soestdijk Palace. No,it impressed but also was a lesson in "first things first".She remembers that well, these days of the storm and flooding
that cost over 1800 lives in the south western parts of The Netherlands.Even her grandmother,Queen Wilhelmina, went to comfort the people
in the affected areas.

There are memorial services and remembrance moments throughout the area today:
