Wrangel
« on: April 04, 2004, 04:49:53 PM »
Hello,
What a great site, I only just discovered it.
I have some questions. My great grandfather Nikolaj von Wrangel was aid-de-camp of Mikhail Romanov.
My great grandmother Marie von Wrangel-Skariatzina was 'dame d'honneur de la majesté l'impératrice de Russie' as says an inscription in a book 'Le traqique destin de Nicolas II et de sa famille', about the Romanovs that I got from  my grandmother.
Does anyone recognise these names. I would be very interested in finding information on them, or photographs etc.
Thanks in advance.

Oh, and something else, but this concerns Dostoevsky. My great great grandfather, Alexander von Wrangel (brother of general Pjotrs father) was a friend of Dostoevsky when they were both living in Semipalatinsk, Siberia. There exist letters from Dostoevsky to Alexander, I also found out that Alexander wrote his memoires about the time he spent with Dostoevsky. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can find those memoires, and how I can find out if there are any pictures of Dostoevsky and Alexander?
Lots of questions and I really hope anyone can help me.

Sorry, stupid, I completely forgot the surname. It's Alexander von Wrangel. I've changed it.

Baron General von Wrangel wrote an interesting autobiography.   If you haven't done so already, you might consider trying to obtain a copy.

Baron Peter von Wrangel's memoirs printed in English in 1930 have been trimmed to exclude references deemed not interesting for the English reader of the day, at the specific request of the author before his death. The Russian version is more detailed.

The book essentially deals with his military experiences during the Civil War in the Crimea and his exile to Constantinople. Very little can be gained in this tome about his family.

However his son Alexei has published a more comprehensive biography in 1990 ... in English. It does discuss family issues.

The book is not too difficult to find in quality second hand stores. My copy was published by Leo Cooper in London.

Hope you can find a copy.

:)

I know that I am related to the von Wrangel family both on my father's (Narishkin) and my mother's (Mouravieff) side. I also know that there are von Wrangels living in Sweden.

I have no photos or documents for you, but you could try to contact the von Wrangels in Sweden - here is the url to the Swedish telephone directory:

http://www.infobel.com/teldir/result.asp?url=http://privatpersoner.gulasidorna.se/

Type "von Wrangel" (without the quotation marks) in the "Efternamn" box, and click on the "Sök" button. There are several pages with Wrangels.

I hope that helps.

Should you ever get to Saint Petersburg, you might visit the Saints Peter and Paul Fortress and ask to view the sword of the explorer Baron Wrangel. It is/was kept in a large safe in the curitorial area which is on the inside of the inner main entrance gate to the right. Go to the Commandant's House first to seek premission to see the sword from the Director or the Chief of Collections. If permission is granted, they will send a Curator to escort you into the collection area.

General Wrangel was a great Russian patriot who loved Imperial Russia. He died too early but gave everything for the White cause.

A little bit of information on the life of Lieutenant-General Wrangel:

Peter Nikolaievich Wrangel, a member of a Baltic German noble family, was born on 15 August 1878 at Zarasai, Lithuania and died at Brussels, Belgium on 25 April 1928. He served with distinction in the Russo-Japanese War and continued his military career by attending the General Staff Academy, graduating in 1910. In August 1914 he was given command of a cavalry squadron in East Prussia and in 1916 he was given command of a Cossack regiment in Galitsia. Attaining the rank of Major-General,  Wrangel command Seventh Cavalry Division in 1917. Lieutenant-General Wrangel joined the White counter-revolutionary forces and he captured Tsartisyn in July 1919. Personal animosity led to Lieutenant-General Wrangel being dismissed from the White Army by Anton Denikin and his temporary retirement in Yalta. In April, 1920 he was elected Commander-in-Chief of the White forces in the Crimea. He managed the evacuation of 150,000 White forces to Turkey in November 1920. After the end of the Russian Civil War, Lieutenant-General Wrangel founded and led an organisation for White Russian veterans called the Russian Social Union. He is buried in the Orthodox Church at Kalemegdan, Serbia. A monument dedicated to the memory of Peter Nikolaievich Wrangel is to be found in the Serbian town of Sremski Karlovci.
