Archduke Karl (1771-1847) was one of the3 very few military commanders to defeat Napoleon in the field, and as much as anything through his personal bravery and the inspiration he gave to his men. At a crucial moment of the Battle of Aspern-Essling in 1809, when the Austrian line had broken, the Archduke seized a colour and personally led the Austrian reserves into the fight. The French faltered, and Napoleon called off the attack, allowing bthe Austrians to regroup and advance once more.
