В ДЕКАБРЕ ТОГО ЖЕ ГОДА ЗАГОВОР ВО ГЛАВЕ С КНЯЗЕМ ФЕЛИКСОМ ЮСУПОВЫМ ПОЛОЖИЛ КОНЕЦ ЖИЗНИ РАСПУТИНА, ЕГО ТЕЛО ТАК И НЕ БЫЛО НАЙДЕНО В ЛЕДЯНОЙ НЕВЕ. ОБСТОЯТЕЛЬСТВА ЕГО СМЕРТИ ВЫЗЫВАЛИ СПОРЫ У НЕСКОЛЬКИХ ПОКОЛЕНИЙ, НО НЕТ НИКАКИХ СОМНЕНИЙ В ТОМ, ЧТО ЕГО ЧРЕЗМЕРНОЕ ВЛИЯНИЕ НА ИМПЕРАТОРСКУЮ СЕМЬЮ И ПОСЛУЖИЛО ПРИЧИНОЙ ЕГО СМЕРТИ.

ТЕОДОРА КРАРУП ВЫЖИЛА В РЕВОЛЮЦИЮ И ДАЖЕ ВЫСТАВЛЯЛА НЕКОТОРЫЕ СВОИ РАБОТЫ НА ПЕРВОЙ ГОСУДАРСТВЕННОЙ БЕСПЛАТНОЙ ВЫСТАВКЕ В 1919 ГОДУ. ОНА ВЕЛА ТИХУЮ ЖИЗНЬ И СМОГЛА ПРЕПОДАВАТЬ НА ПОДГОТОВИТЕЛЬНЫХ КУРСАХ АКАДЕМИИ ХУДОЖЕСТВ В САНКТ-ПЕТЕРБУРГЕ В ТЕЧЕНИЕ 13 ЛЕТ ДО 1934 ГОДА. НО В 1938 ГОДУ ЕЙ ПРИШЛОСЬ РЕШАТЬ ВОПРОС: ИЛИ ПРИНЯТЬ СОВЕТСКОЕ ГРАЖДАНСТВО, ИЛИ ПОКИНУТЬ СТАЛИНСКУЮ РОССИЮ. Theodora Krarup had extraordinary access to the Imperial Romanov family of Russia and completed many portrait commissions, most of which have been lost to history due to the chaos of the Bolshevik Revolution. She remained in post-Revolutionary Russia and continued to paint and teach, then ultimately fled in 1938 when authorities insisted she adopt Soviet citizenship. She decided to destroy her paintings and return to her native Denmark, in part to rehabilitate the Romanov image and that of Rasputin as well, whom she knew from her time at court. It is fortunate for history that at least a select few of her portraits survive today.

Theodora Krarup was born in Denmark in 1860 and by 1885 was a trained portraiture artist and sculptor. She made her way to Berlin in 1888 for intense study there and in 1890 entered the Académie Julian in Paris. She had an intense desire to travel the world, and after 1896 journeyed to Russia and made fast friends with Maria Fedorovna, widow of Russian emperor Alexander III, mother of the reigning emperor, Nicholas II, and importantly, the former Empress Dagmar of Denmark, Krarup's native country. Fedorovna immediately put her to work on a portrait of her late husband. This association led her to mix with the rest of the Romanov family, becoming an Artist to the Court and completing portraits of the Imperial family until their demise in 1917 at the hands of the Bolsheviks.

Krarup was particularly fond of the historically much-maligned Grigori Efimovich Rasputin. A holy man from Siberia and from humble beginnings, Rasputin was a favorite of the Empress Alexandra, Fedorovna's daughter-in-law, an association due almost entirely to his apparent ability to halt the Tsarevich Alexis' deadly episodes of bleeding caused by his hemophilia. There were many witnesses to Rasputin's powers of healing, including the artist Krarup. But while the Empress believed the holy man had been sent by God, Rasputin quickly made enemies within the Court and was used as a scapegoat by those who would oppose the Tsar's appointments. As Rasputin tried to expand his circle of influence throughout the Imperial family he was mostly rebuffed, although he was credited with saving the life of the Tsarina's friend, Anya Vyrubova, who was severely injured in a train accident.

In Krarup's portrait of Rasputin dated 1916, the year of his death, she depicts him in a pleasant, seated pose with a slight smile, pleasant eyes and clad in a white robe, not at all like the contemporary photographs of the controversial holy man with his dark, brooding face and clothing. While photographs show Rasputin in almost militaristic poses with his hands, here Krarup shows his hands calmly folded in his lap.

Based on the date of this picture, Krarup may very well have completed the last portrait of the man done from life. In December of that year, a conspiracy led by Prince Felix Yussupov would end Rasputin's life, his body found in the icy Neva River. The details of his death have been in dispute for generations, but there is no doubt that his inordinate influence over the Imperial family led to his death.

Theodora Krarup would survive the Revolution, and actually displayed some of her work in the first State free exhibition in 1919. She maintained a low profile and was able to teach at the preparatory art academy in Saint Petersburg for 13 years until 1934. In 1938 she was confronted with the choice of accepting Soviet citizenship or fleeing Stalinist Russia. She left Russia for her native Denmark, taking only a few paintings with her and destroying the rest. She also took with her a promise to the family of Rasputin to tell the world of a different Rasputin, the holy man who comforted the Imperial family. She died just a few years later in 1941, reflecting on her experiences with the Romanovs and Rasputin.

This portrait is a rare example of Rasputin done from life by an artist who knew him well, a woman of extraordinary talent who was a favorite of the Imperial family.

Theodora Krarup was born in Scheelborg in 1862 and studied in Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris and Helsinki, before fulfilling a lifelong ambition to visit Russia, at the age of 34, where she remained for forty two years. Krarup lived in St. Petersburg, where she was asked by the, dowager Maria Feodorovna to paint the late Alexander III from pictures. She was then commissioned to paint further Imperial portraits from life.

Krarup became a friend of Rasputin and painted a total of twelve portriats of him, the last of which was completed five days before his death. According to her memoires, Rasputin entrusted his own memoires, photograph album and letters to her, but these along with her own remaining works, she had to destroy the day before her deportation in 1938. However, she attempted to refute the scandalous reputation of Rasputin in her own memoires, dictated to and published by : Henning Kehler and William Haste.

And the last in row -- Ana Reshetnikova.
In the second row is Sofia Volinska, then Virburova, woman in black - Gushchina, woman with hat is Lili Dehn, then Rasputin's father, and in the last row are Zina Timopheyeva,Maria Golovina(sitting), Rasputin and Mrs. Kleist, and last woman Akylina Laptinskaya, near Rasputin's legs.

That's interesting.  Does anyone have more info on the history of Rasputin's father?  Did he survive his son, if so what happened to him after  the Revolution?

Rasputin had problems with father when he (Rasputin) was drunk, but cried a lot when his father died.
