The Mountain Hall and it's doors
« on: May 16, 2008, 12:45:06 PM »
Hello,

I was studying the Mountain Hall photos -v- the plans, as you do. I see there is the main door into the Portrait Hall,  the main door into the Great library and a door into the Small Library. Behind the Mountain there is a door which suggests that it leads into Buffet room but on the plan it suggests that this is a false door? I was wondering is this door was there only for symmetry or if it did open into the buffet room or had been blocked at some time? (buffet rooms used when Parade Halls used for functions - serve food to visitors?)

Silly question I know but it has been bugging me all day! Thats the trouble when you read plans, site info and forums...

Many thanks,

Michael

Michael, I don't know the answer to your question, sorry, but looking at the pictures on another of your posts I thought wonder why the germans did not destroy the doors to the Maple Room?   Or are they reproductions?  Also, I know the floorplan of the palace has been changed (I guess to accomadate the museum) but are the walls in the corridor the original walls?   Thanks, Tracy

Oh, and PS, I saw Bob on TV the other day on "Secrets of the Romanovs".  Very exciting!

Hi,

Not seen secrets of the Romonov's and sounds very interesting. Lucky Bob but he is the one person on earth worth speaking to (apart form the R.F.A. or Prince Nicholas of course).

I was just looking at the plans fo rthe Palace when the music room was still there and it clearlyt shows the door form the Mountain Hall I asked about into the Portrait Hall and therefore this door did exsist. If it was in use by the end of the Dynasty I still do not know.

I thought you originally asked about the door that led to the buffet room.  On the Quarenghi plan I posted in another thread, there is no door to the buffet room and neither is there one on any of the plans from N&A's time. Since a door is seen in the photo of the "mountain slide", I'd assume it is a fake door placed there for symmetry.

Dear BobG,

Many thanks. I also managed to find the original plan and as you say there is no door into the buffet room. So that one is answered! It must have been for symmetry.

I have heard that the Mountain Hall is the next to be restored. Has anybody heard when this and any other projects are likely to be completed?
I intend to make my next visit when more rooms have been restored and open to the public.
