Vadim Znamenov made a miraculous recovery from his stroke Joanna, and, fortunately, with no deficit.   He certainly possesses an extraordinarily deep knowledge and understanding of arts, culture and history.   As a man, he could scarcely be more different to Ivan Petrovich Sautov.   I doubt they would ever have been able to understand each other - polar opposites, but each effective in his own way.

As Bob Atchison wrote, Ivan Petrovich's immense influence has been felt well beyond the precincts of the palaces and the parks of Tsarskoe Selo.   He was a key figure in the town of Pushkin and in its regeneration.

Ivan Petrovich, such a forceful and powerful character has laid the groundwork which should see the restoration of the many still remaining ruins at Tsarskoe Selo - including, of course, the Farm, which, though very different in its purpose to that at Peterhof, still played an integral part in the lives of successive Romanovs at Tsarskoe Selo.

There is another park nearby, the name of which I can't remember.  It is actually a lake with 2 islands,  small palaces. Created for the daughters of  one of the emperors.  I have not been there- yet, but it is apparently very popular with Petersburgers.  Off the beaten track  for tourists. Perhaps someone here can give more information about it?

The Rose Pavillion sounds familiar. All I really know is that  it is a lake with 2 islands, each of which has a small palace or pavillion like the Petite Trianon. Now used mainly for  music events. It can be located on maps of Petrovorets, and is not far from Peterhof at all. My Russian pal will take me there next spring, I hope!

That is it, Reco! Have you been there? Apprently it is  a  nice place to go for Petersburgers, away from tourists. [which is one reason I like Orienbaum so much] I have no pictures of the park and pavillions, so would love to see them if anyone does.

I was amazed when standing at the rear of the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Peterhof how close the water and islands were as the distance on the map is deceiving!

Robert Hall, when you visit soon there is a new 20 page book in English "Peterhof - The Tsarina's and Olga's Islands" published in 2007.

Also two fantastic articles with photographs and plans of the two pavilions by VladimirV:

Thank you so much, Joanna.  I really appreciate the information.  Springtime should be a lovely time to visit them. A nice diversion on or way to Oranienbaum. I may ask my Russian friendguide to  pick up the book  beforehand.
