The thread "Empress Alexandra Fights Bank" has been removed.  Griff, the author of the thread and now the author of an upcoming book, had to have all of the information removed because his published wished it.

In response to Eddie's query re the British governments desire to uphold the offer of asylum to the IF is was on a recent BBC documentary (jan/2012) called ''King George and Queen Mary: The Royals Who Rescued the Monarchy'' it may be on you tube or BBC iplayer. It was very good. I apologise for the '' ice in veins'' quote. I don't have anything against Queen Mary at all, in fact I rather admire her. I only mentioned it to demonstrate that is was a reliable quote against the topic of lots of 'hearsay' about Alexandra, not that it was justified.

My own very personal take on Alexandra comes from having lost my mother also as a young child. Its not something you ever really get over and it shapes the rest of your life. I think also in Alexandra's case her grandmother, Queen Victoria's example of how she dealt with the loss of Prince Albert must have made matters worse. I think it made her very fatalistic and her son's terrible terrible suffering compounded this. Modern medical science now understands the link between mental stress and physical illness and Alexandra spent most of her adult life in poor health. I can't imagine how onerous it must have been to have felt so panicked and stressed all the time. I believe everything she did she did for love. For the love of God, her family and for Russia.

Ditto.

It does point out that to be a successful twentieth/twenty first century monarch you must be mindful of the people you rule (or, more accurately, embody) and, more importantly, you must be able to communicate with them directly (or, at least, to establish a personal link), something that, alas, NI and AF didn't and probably were unable to do (whether by tradition, personality or personal conviction).  Interestingly, Queen Elizabeth had her own moment of crisis with the handling of the death of Princess Diana, which was superbly portrayed by Helen Mirren (ironically, perhaps, she of Russian extraction) in The Queen

From memory the "ice veined bitches" comment was made by the Duke of Windsor in a letter to his wife during the period he returned to England for funeral of George VI.

He was fighting and angry because Palace officials were trying to persuade the new monarch that the allowance paid by "Bertie" to "David" which had caused so much rancour after the abdication should stop because it was the personal gift of the late King.

I think the letter was published in the 80s in one of the numerous biographies of Edward and Wallis. And is usually taken as attack on both Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth

He was equally vitriolic after he visited his dying mother in early 1953 and repeated the phrase about "ice in her veins".

It contrasts somewhat with the descriptions of his mother that he made in his autobiography when he speaks of the pleasure they had when she was alone with her children without George V around.

George, Mary and Princess Victoria were exceptionally kind and generous to Xenia throughout the remainder of her life as the book "Once a Grand Duchess" reveals which i heartily recommend.

The initial invitation/offer of asylum was made at Cabinet level in Britain and followed an inquiry from the Provisional Government - it was withdrawn after the urging of the King via Lord Stamfordham and also at the urging of Russia's provisional government.

Details of Foreign Office docs relating to the asylum offer can be found here http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php?title=The_Fate_of_Tsar_Nicholas_II_of_Russia

Is it possible that many of those who wrote to glowingly of visits with Nicholas and Alexandra while they were on their 1986 tour

Nicky and Alix went on tour 68 years after they had died!?

***Twilight Zone theme begins to play***

Submitted for your approval, one Tsar Nicholas II and his wife, Alexandra.  While on a royal tour, they took a wrong turn coming home and wound up in, the Twilight Zone...

Well, I just watched ''Edward The Seventh'' and I was happy to see so many familiar faces, Alix and motherdear Marie F. and her sister Alexandra ... but still I got the impression something was wrong with Alix, she just didn't fit in! I feel so much for her, I can almost identify myself, so much isolated with only Nicholas to love! The rest of the British royals seemed to ignore her.
