pearls, elegance and sadness?
« on: August 29, 2009, 09:33:27 AM »
I was thinking about this these last days, seeing the foto of Alix with Alexei and her long string of pearls in his hands. It reminded me of the famous foto of Jackie Kennedy with her famous (faux) perls and her son playing with them. I once read pearls somehow symbolise sadness and tears and I wonder if someone here knew something more about it.

Yes, pearls do symbolise tears with regards to Victorian mourning customs. Pearls were used to make Victorian mourning jewelry, although they were also used for regular jewelry. I've never seen the Jackie photo, maybe somebody could post that and the Alexandra one to this thread. I know I've seen the Alexandra one, but it's been awhile.
