I'd say the second picture is from an earlier period, as Nicholas is wearing a pre-1910 uniform, and in the first picture Olga looks fairly adult. Any idea who he was in mourning for?

Question. When did Nicholas grow his beard?
In the second photo he still has just a moustache, so if that was taken in 1894 he must have grown a beard just before his accession.

That picture was not taken in 1894, but prior. I d say 1891.

The famous "Coburg" photo, taken during the wedding of Alix's brother Ernie and Victoria Melita (during which Nicholas and Alix got engaged) shows him wearing a beard.  That was taken in April 1894.

I like that picture of him. It gives of a sense of normal-ness. Him just sitting in his chair reading the paper like ordinary-everyday people.
