Abastumani was a popular mountain resort during the Soviet period. Now independent Georgia is undergoing a continuing political unrest and economic distress, and the whole area seems far from secure... They still maintain some facilities - see their supposedly English website. It makes no mention of Abastumani's Romanovs-related history but shows the beautiful scenery.

The place is well-known in the astrophysical scientific community due to a nearby observatory founded by GD George shortly before his death.

George lived at Abas Tuman in the Caucasus Mountains, where the air was supposed to be more beneficial to him due to his tubercular condition.  He also had the first observatory (I think) built on the estate with his own money.  I haven't been able to find a picture of the estate, however.  Is anyone aware if there are any pictures floating around out there?  Thanks!

From what I have been able to find, Abas Tuman is in the modern country of Georgia, near the capital of Tblisi.  Not sure if it still standing...

According to the 1914 edition of Baedeker's Russia , Abbas-Tuman had two Grand-ducal villas which burned down in 1913.  There also was a chapel standing where George Alexandrovich died in 1899 but I doubt that  it is still there either.

Felix, if you access the Other Palaces group of threads, and scroll a little bit further down, you will see a thread called Abas Tumani, which has some additional information on the estate.  I just found the thread myself.   :D

I found this painting of a chapel in Abas Tuman by the famous Russian painter Mikhail Nesterov, dated 1900:

It might well be the chapel built where GD George died.

I don't  think it is the chapel, becouse it is too small.
