Only daughter, Viktoria Luise was treated differently by their parents who showed more flexibility and leniency towards her than towards her brothers.

By her parents's darling, Viktoria Luise could become a capricious woman, selfish and arrogant as often happens in such cases. Fortunately, she did not become.

It was not only being the only daughter that garnered her parents' attention and offerened VL expanded opportunities. She had a greater outgoing spirit and sense for leadership. Her father, perhaps whimsically, said he wished she was a man because she appeared more robust and capable than her brothers. Certainly, her legacy speaks to a greater ability to manage affairs.

Purely by chance, I came across some interesting info about Victoria Louise's son Ernst while in London over the weekend.

Thumbing through 'The Truth About Rudolf Hess' by James Douglas-Hamilton, I found not only a photograph of Ernst in civilian clothes in the 1930s (I would guess that it was taken while he was at Oxford) but the information that in 1944 he was brought back from the Russian Front on suspicion of being involved in the July Plot and held in Moabit Prison and interrogated by the Gestapo. He pops up on the fringes of the Rudolf Hess saga because one of the protagonists was in Moabit at the same time and Ernst knew the Douglas-Hamilton family by virtue of having been at Oxford with one of the Duke of Hamilton's younger brothers. He obviously knew the family well enough for one of them to go and see him in Germany within weeks of the end of the war.

Unfortunately, I had no means of copying the photograph, but will do so when I lay hands on the book again.

About the girl that looks a little bit like Viktoria Louisa... Can't she be a relative of her?

She went. There are photos of her and husband from the engagement of Ernst and Ortrud as well as from their civil wedding.

Ortrud is an ancient German name - famous due to Wagner's operas - and might sound strange when pronounced wrongly..........

Duchess Ortrud was née Schleswig-Holstein
