Joachim must have been four or more then, old enough to remember this dreadful hair in later life!
Felix Yussupov, incidentally, claims in Lost Splendours that he actively enjoyed being dressed as a girl.
Incidentally, for non-English-speaking forumeers, Little Lord Fauntleroy was a novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, who also wrote The Secret Garden and A Little Princess. The eponymous lord spends his early years in America but when his father dies he and his mother go to England to live with his stiff-backed old grandfather. This cherubic small boy, with golden girls and clad in a velvet suit with lace collar, spends his time spreading sweetness and light round the place and winning the hearts of everybody. I've never actually read it, knowing the basics of the plot is sick-making enough. But Little Lord Fauntleroy outfits were very fashionable with mothers, though I imagine the boys themselves would have preferred sailor suits.
