'Poor victorian boys and their bananan curls!! xDD'

Exactly. I was delighted to read in one autobiography that the author, born in 1897, got fed up with long hair and dresses at the age of five, and staged a protest to his mother (who had six sons and was desperate for a daughter) by rolling in a freshly deposited pile of horse dung!

Some of the other ideas for dressing boys were pretty bad too. We have a photograph of my maternal grandfather, born in 1885, aged about five, dressed in a Little Lord Fauntleroy outfit and looking properly furious.

Joachim must have been four or more then, old enough to remember this dreadful hair in later life!

Felix Yussupov, incidentally, claims in Lost Splendours that he actively enjoyed being dressed as a girl.

Incidentally, for non-English-speaking forumeers, Little Lord Fauntleroy was a novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, who also wrote The Secret Garden and A Little Princess. The eponymous lord spends his early years in America but when his father dies he and his mother go to England to live with his stiff-backed old grandfather. This cherubic small boy, with golden girls and clad in a velvet suit with lace collar, spends his time spreading sweetness and light round the place and winning the hearts of everybody. I've never actually read it, knowing the basics of the plot is sick-making enough. But Little Lord Fauntleroy outfits were very fashionable with mothers, though I imagine the boys themselves would have preferred sailor suits.

This kind of dress and style for young boys was among the upper classes and nobility, of course.

I have not seen any study that provides insights to the mothers' reasons why such a custom was maintained, but I would suspect for some it may have had something to do with the desire to instill some softness in their sons to balance the overbearing victorianisms of their husbands.

What a relief! Though the clothes are a shade Fauntleroy Joachim's appearance is greatly improved (the poor lad remained chinless, however).

I think the business of long hair etc for boys must have gone out around the time of the First World War, as from then on small boys tend to be seen with short hair and wearing shorts and sweaters and the like (though some still wore sailor suits for special occasions - my father, born in 1928, tells me he had one for going to church). I think clothes for children became much less elaborate and impractical generally.

Well, no...Boys of middle classes were also dressed with these kind of "girl's clothes". I have pics of my great-grandpa and his brothers wearing dresses. And there were sell in all clothes shops back then. They were known as "boy's dresses" (in fact they WERE different from girl's ones, even if they were very similar) .

How old were your great-grandfather and his brothers when wearing dresses?

I have just been reading 'The Bolter' by Frances Osborne (worth a read). The lady in question, elder daughter of the 9th Earl de la Warr, was born in 1893, and there is a photo in the book of her with her brother and sister as children. The brother, born in 1900, looks about two, and is wearing a dress, but has short hair.
