I think more like May than Ella.

I think May was not yet born at that time

Yes. Hard to see pictures as children. Some of them changed so much.

Indeed the extinction of the dynastic line of the House of Hesse & By Rhine was full of dead children instead of old people.

I think that must be done for her grandmother Queen Victoria.

From Royal Collection

Princesses Marie and Alix

They made such a sweet sister couple.

Utterly adorable!
They made such a sweet sister couple.
Absolutely!!
The Royal Collection is such a treasure trove. How were you able to save the entire picture large? because in my experience, I could only zoom in on parts, and the whole photo was visible only very small.

I think May was even less smiling than Alix.

Actually both Alix and May were known to be happy little creatures, always laughing and making others laugh. It was only later that smile got lost from Alix´s face. To judge something like that from a photograph doesn´t really make much sense. They were little children, probably told to just hold still, and had to endure the long and tiring photography process with poses changing and everyting. If I was four years old like May, I too wouldn´t like it. Everybody in that time looks depressed in the photos, simply because it was kind of a fashion and to look expresionless (or "Sad") doesn´t make your muscles hurt like trying to keep up your smile for minutes.
