Oh, I really love those dresses, they are so beautiful. I like that pic of her above them. I like the way she's standing kinda like she's thinking of something.

I know. However I do know that pink does not go well with green stones like emeralds. Ella was given such status of one with style and colour that she would allow a colour clash like that. Pink would look good with her pearls & diamonds...

Pink and green are classic colour combinations. They were first used by Marie Antoinette in her petite trianion and copied throughout europe afterwards.... and it's all about getting the shades right. A light pink might set off the emeralds and diamonds so that they appear more green by comparison. Real emeralds, like they have in these old settings are a totally different beast to most of the stones you see in modern jewellery. They are a rich, saturated green with hints of black.

Well...I saw the colour photo of her emerald tiara, and it did not go well with pink. Maybe the reason they replace the emerald with glass, or as you say it is a period thing.

It depends on how people see the combination; some like it while some don't.

But Ella looks good in everything she wears, whether colour-coordinated or not ; )

The point I am making is that she did consult fashion magazines on the latest trends before making her own version of the dresses. Prince Christopher of Greece wrote she matched her dresses with jewels and sometimes changes her clothes during parties. She must have been a real show stopper !  ;)

Some Victorian combination, looking back then, are "weird to understand". I dont like the mix "pink-green" but it was very fashioanble in those years

I look back at the 1960s & 1970s sometimes with a "what were they thinking" when I see some of the colours in fabrics. The 19th century saw a gradual revolution in taste, but they were in general fond of bright colours. Ella gave away most of her stuff to family and friends after Serge's death.  It would have been interesting to know where it all ended up. All I know is that a large chunk of jewels went to Marie Pavlovna jr, I'm not sure if she got a lot else.

Not all...some of Ella's fab jewelry went to Dimitri, the Houses of Hesse & Russia.

Did not know that one - I have seen a frame with eight photographs from that stay at Ilinskoe. Is there a larger image? Would like to send it to the grand daughter of Gretchen von Fabrice Princess Alix's lady-i.w.  But it is too blurry
