Svetabel, did Ella have a tumor? I looked through a dictionary but didn’t find the meaning of oncotomy but found out that the prefix “onco-“ means ‘tumor’.

Yes, she had a tumour. Here's the thread with discussion about it:

I think that’s not true. Although I have no book about her, I think she treated all religions equally. I think that info you read, Eric, was a kind of “sweeping generalization” for all the Romanovs. I read in Nicholas & Alexandra that Tsar Alexander III was anti-Semitic…With that, I think some people (including that one who said that info about Ella) concluded that if Tsar Alexander III was anti-Semitic, therefore, the other Romanovs also are.
(My English is horrible; I hope it could be understood. I’m very sorry.)

I think I have read elsewhere that grand duchess Elizabeth her self wasn't anti-Semitic. However it was widespread as an attitude in Imperial Russia, with even Alexander III openly anti-Semitic in his policies. The jews were blamed for everything that went wrong from the 14th century to the 19th century throughout most of Europe. They were a convenient, non-christian scapegoat for all the worlds ills. While Ella may not have directly and openly supported anti-Semitic polices, her influence apparently did have some impact in continuing the persecutions against the jews in Russia if this page is anything to go by - and it wasn't a positive imapact:

http://www.kingandwilson.com/AtlantisArticles/Inheritance.htm

where it is stated:

The most notorious of these pogroms took place in Kishinev, at Easter, 1903. Forty-seven Jews were murdered, and some 600 were beaten and tortured, not only by a mob but by the local police as well. By the end of three days, more than fifteen hundred Jewish shops and homes had been looted and burnt, the authorities either idly standing by and either doing nothing, or participating in the devastation themselves.92

The Easter Pogrom was the brainchild of Vyacheslav Plehve, the Minister of the Interior, who, as Sir Bernard Pares later wrote, "almost openly authorized" the massacre.93 Plehve was an extremist in every sense: a vehement monarchist, he was devoutly Orthodox, and rabidly anti-Semitic. These qualities appealed greatly to Nicholas II, but Plehve gained his appointment with the assistance of an unlikely source: Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, Alexandra's sister and wife of Grand Duke Serge Alexandrovich.

Yes. I don't think she personally have anything against Jews, but accepted Serge's opinion on that.

What a great picture Shandroise.  That's Ella with little Olga. And Olga has been playing in the mud by the look of it :)  I found more than one source on the net with the same information about Plehve and Ella. Ella may be a saint but she wasn't perfect and did support some extremists in her time...and her support of Rasputin's murder was also another dark episode for her I think. It was obvioulsy also a severe shock to Alexandra.

I think Ella truly believed that Rasputin was the devil incarnate and had to be destroyed by a Christian.

ok, i don't know if this is going to sound like a really stupid question, but i obviously knew that ella became orthodox by choice, and therefore an orthodox nun, i also thought that the orthodox cross had two horizontal lines and one diagonal. now i don't know if i'm missing something obvious here- i probably am, it wouldn't surprise me, but i found a picture of ella (as a nun) wearing a large cross around her neck- however it was not an orthodox cross, but a C of E one, its a picture i think is pretty common- one i saw all the time, but i never noticed it before- what am i missing? please explain someone?
