Irene is at the piano, Ella is reaching towards Dona, Louis is near the wall, VMH is seated with Alice at her feet and Alix is in the back center talking to a cousin. Serge & Henry are next to each other on the right side of the door while Ernie is on the left side right behind Alix.

I don't know if this was a separate sitting for the Hesses (like the Wales family and others) or not. The poses are virtually identical to that in the portrait but the positioin to each other is off. That makes me think it could be a later composite--especially given that Henry & Irene weren't even engaged at the Jubilee, I don't think. They could have been married however, by the time the original group portrait was done

Just recently I read a letter from GD Ella to her father: that Tuxen portrait ("unsere Gruppe von Tuxen") was Ella and Serge's Xmas present to Grand Duke Ludwig IV. in 1887. She obviously ordered it right after the original huge family assembly was completed.
It is to be seen in the recently re-opened Schlossmuseum Darmstadt - depicting also a tiny Princess Alice of Battenberg crawling on the floor at her mother's feet (the only figure Tuxen obviously "transformed" in that new composition - and the ribbon and bows on her dress are red in that case).
Irene and Heinrich were engaged even before the jubilee took place - already in March '87 Ella writes to her father in addition to the weddingpresent they are planning to give!

Thanks Thomas for the additional info. I haven't read QV's letters to VMH in awhile so I wasn't sure on the engagement period. Given the almost exact posing, etc...it seems that Tuxen might not have gotten the family poses he did with the Waleses, Cumberlands, etc...It looks like he went by what he had for the actual painting--sometimes those were photos of individual sittings but I don't know if the far-flung Hesses (Britain, Germany and Russia) were able to give him those or he cribbed from the actual work.

Tuxen worked with photos on his paintings of the Glucksborgs in Fredensborg & later on the coronation of Nicholas II.
