YKYOWTR when you sit down in Littrans 201 (19th Century Russian Literature) for the first time and you look at the guy sitting on your right and think, "Oh my gosh, he looks just like Nicholas!" Identical profiles, same hair color, neatly trimmed beard. He looked like Nicholas dressed in a baseball cap and T-shirt. It was weird.

YKYOWTRW you hear your co-worker going on about loving the name Anastasia and want to name her first girl Anastasia after the character from a certain famous drivel of a novel.  And all I could think of was argh why did E.L James name her "heroine" Anastasia. Nooooo!

YKYOWTR when you are admiring OTMA's gorgeous long hair in photos and think to yourself  "Gee, if only they had blowdryers and the great hair products we enjoy today, can you imagine how much more drop-dead gorgeous they would be."   I think I notice this because I have the kind of hair that when I was young could not be grown too long because it just went limp and stringy.   Those girls all had luscious heads of hair that I would have given anything for.

BlessOTMA and HistoryFan - right!  This made me think of Nicholas who reportedly had poor dental health.   We certainly have access to better dental care now than they did at the turn of the century, but Nicholas could have afforded the best the world had to offer.  I often wondered why he didn't take care of that.   Forensic reports state that Alexandra and the children did have expensive (for the times) dental work done.

The Kaiser patronised an American dentist in Berlin, who later wrote a book based on his meetings with him (Arthur N Davis: The Kaiser I Knew). According to him, the Kaiser was an extremely stoical patient (I imagine dentistry was a good deal more painful than it is now), but Davis didn't get much done on days that he visited, since the waiting room filled up with ADCs and after his appointment the Kaiser liked to stay and chat! However, his youngest son Joachim was a complete wimp in the dentist's chair.

Ann, funny story!  The Kaiser and his ADC's would never get away with that these days.  They'd each be billed for the entire day under the billing code for "Consultation".

I well remember a dentist in my history student days  asking me about Polish anti-Semitism when I could do nothing but grunt.
