Rosie

This sounds most unpleasant. A student of mine had that or something similar done and her jaws were wired together for weeks!

Good luck and swift healing

Behind only #1 John D. Rockefeller and #2 Andrew Carnegie according to the list I saw.

From what I've read Felix Yusupov was considered to be the richest person in Russia at one point. I guess that only takes into account "private" citizens? At no point would his wealth have exceeded the astronomical total obtained by Nicholas II, at least until after the the revolution and after the Tsar's death. By then I seriously doubt Felix's fortune could have fully remained in tact as well...and then of course he fled the country.

......everytime the news mentions that the European leaders are meeting in Davos, you think - Dmitri Pavlovich died there, in a tuberculosis sanatorium - and you wonder if that is where they are all staying, as it is now a hotel.

YKYOWTRW I had morning tea with fellow workmates and one of them brings up wanting to go to St Petersburg.   And I  said that I too would go to see the Palaces.   Which the others agreed and I mention that I want to see the AP the most most.   Most of them looked confused except for one guy he said it would be great.     The topic changed when someone spotted some important papers in the bin :-/   Maybe might chat with the guy later about AP?   Maybe lol.

Rosie, what was the confusion though? Did you call it the 'AP' instead of 'Alexander Palace' and that was the reason for the blank stares? Or did people not recognize Alexander Palace as being one of the premier tourist attractions in and around the city?

If the latter that seems strange to me. Sort of like someone saying, "I'm hoping to get to Disney World" receiving approval, and then mentioning "And specifically Epcot" and receiving blank stares.

I said Alexander Palace,  I only refer to it as AP when on this forum or talking to other members.   My co-workers are in their mid 30s to late 40s and I'm pretty sure the ones who gave me a look of confusion have not heard of the Alexander Palace.   They would know of Peterhof,  Hermitage and the Catherine Palace as they are the more famous palaces in St Petersburg.    The guy who I was talking to knew the AP and it's history while the others didn't.    I did say I would like to see all the palaces, and AP would be one of the ones I want to check out on my list of things to see.  I wasn't bragging to them that I want to see it the Alexander Palace, I said I would like to see Gatchina, Peterhof, Hermitage, Catheriene (which they all said that would be great to see how the Imperial Family live) and I added "If you want to see the home of the last Tsar check out Alexander Palace."

So you see not alot of people know the of the Alexander Palace as a premier tourist attraction of St Petersburg.

Yeah, I tend to find Catherine Palace, Winter Palace, Gatchinaand Peterhof are the most well known of St.Petersburg's palace, and when I mention Alexander Palace, I find that I have to explain where it is, because it's not the most well known of the palaces. Whenever i look in books about Russia (i.e. the travel books) I find there are huge sections about the other palaces and a small bit about AP.

That's right Jen even in travel shows when it is about St Petersburg in regards to Palaces,  it's always the Hermitage,  Catherine and Peterhof.   I don't think I have come across a travel show featuring Alexander Palace.
