Do we know who painted the picture and when? As I remember, Queen Victoria made Nicholas Colonel-in-Chief of the Greys when he and Alexandra visited Balmoral in 1896. A slight irony, as the Greys took part in the successful Charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaclava in 1854!

There is a nice story that there were a few problems with Nicholas's Greys' uniform. The Russians sent a set of his measurements to the regimental tailors, who set about making the uniform, using inches, whereas the measurements had been done in centimetres! As there are 2.54 centimetres to the inch, I fear the result would have been too big even for Alexander III!

Meanwhile, when I was in the gym this morning an advert for a vacuum cleaner came up on the TV screen. I thought it said 'Romanov' when it said 'Removes'!

I've read it was painted in 1902.  :)

Here is the uniform, which I believe is in Russia.

YKYOWTR when on of the things you think about at night, when nothing is stirring, if what you would do if you could just go and meet them.

Like for example, I ponder whether I would call them Your Majesties, and in what order would I greet them, etc. I have it pretty worked out xD (First, I would hug whichever of NAOTMAA I see first, put gingerly if it was Alexei or Alix, and then introduce myself as someone from the future. Then I would tell M&A to not burn any diaries, and Alix too... And I would figure out just which bedroom was which. :D)

Perhaps you could beneficially work these "ponderances" into the "Days of OTMA's Lives - And So It Continues" fantasy saga, of which I believe you have agreed to co-write recently.  ("Glad to be on board!" - Jan.01, 2012, "Writers' Circle" Topic)   AP.

If my experience in the studio is any indication, I believe if we met them, it is highly likely we would faint . So keep the smelling salts handy =)

Indeed blessOTMA, indeed!

AP, I hardly think that would have a place in it. The characters are established, and of course, this is just my daydream. (It's rather ironic isn't it? Day dreaming at night I mean.) I don't really see where it would fit in.
This attitude is making me think you're a fan of the "saga". Is there any truth to that?

Talya and BlessOTM - I had to chuckle when I read the last few posts.   You think you would faint?  Imagine the effect on NAOTMAA if they were suddenly dropped into 2012!!!   From the protected, pristine environment they lived in to the permissive "anything goes" environment of today, I'd love to know what their reaction would be.   Think about them flipping through tv channels today - just the titles of shows alone would be enough to send Alexandra straight to confession.    It would be fun to make a list of current tv shows and movies that you would want them to see without embarrassment.   I think the list would be pretty short.

Antiques Roasdhow.... ummm..... ummm.... ummm.... You are so right! I was talking more like I drop in about say 1916, but I agree with your post whole heartedly! I seriously can't think of anymore shows. This will bother me for a while now xD

Let get a list going, shall we?

Antiques Roadshow

That's all I can think of :)

Maria) Nice that you brought that up...I'm by no means alone when having given some thought about how I would handle someone from the past (OTMA or otherwise) brought into 2012, even though most of my dreams have dealt with the opposite scenario...me going back in time to meet them instead of the other way around.

It would be quite a challenge, and one we have discussed on other topic forums, but I would do my best to ease them into their new reality. I might even spend several months getting them slowly accustomed to things and brought up to speed. Using the IF as an example, and if money were no object (let me sell some of your jewels girls!), I'd probably purchase a cottage or estate out in the countryside surrounded by nature and with limited exposure to the outside world.

History would be the main topic...90+ years of it on literally hundreds of topics. I'd also spend some time each day introducing to them a new gadget, synthetic material, new food, etc. Get them familiarized with it. This would be a long and often arduous process, but over several months of learning in living conditions not all that dissimilar to what they were accustomed to in their day I think they'd finally be ready for a trip to the great places & cities of the world.

edubs31 - You have the right idea - ease them into it.   But it seems like more of the lifetime project than just several months, don't you think?   You're right about the updates on history.   That would have to be the priority since it affects every aspect of our lives every day.   I nominate you for the job - GOOD LUCK!   :) ;) :)

Talya, you have the best idea though - go to them instead of them coming to you.  So much less confusing.  We have the advantage of knowing past history and can adapt ourselves.   See, now you have me dayidreaming about meeting them too!   Wouldn't that be wonderful to have such a gift!

Haha thanks, I'll call or consult the AP for any assistance :-)

Originally I was thinking they'd need at least a year to get up to speed but of course that's a year pretty much locked away from the world that they're no doubt itching to see and I'd hate to do that to them...especially Alexei who I would of course make top priority his health and administer some modern medicine (get Alexandra on some meds as well!) too.

One or more of the girls would probably try to runaway if kept in seclusion for a year though, don't you think? Like the stories of Amish kids going in joyrides that you hear every now and again, lol

But back on topic...how about being obsessed enough that as I type this message, on my phone, I'm ignoring the NCAA tournament games that I specifically walked down to the bar on lunch break to see!!!

It's okay, sometimes in school I like to get on the forum, via phone. I then save pictures and email them to myself for later! Oh, the Romanovs rule my life, but I don't mind!

Maria, I always daydream about going to them, but you've gotten me daydreaming about them coming to us! I've always liked the idea of going to them, so I can see how they lived and what daily life was like.
