Kamennostrovsky Palace
« on: April 23, 2004, 01:02:47 PM »
Does anyone have any info on the palace? Who used it in the time of Nicholas and Alexandra? What are the interiors like?

Thanks

Hello Dimitri,
When Alexander I dead the palace passed to his younger brother, Grand Duke Mikhail, and his descendants owned the palace until the revolution.
Then it became a sanatorium for military pilots. The interiors are very well preserved.

Antonio.

You can find some excellent exterior shots on the Wandering Camera Website. The interior of the palace is preserved including the Oval Hall. It was from here that Alexander I was said to have planned the War with Napoleon. As I understand it was used for the heir's to the throne until the revolution. I have some pics and a floorplan if you want to see them

It's on Kamennostrovsky-Stone Island-just to the north and a bit west of central St. Petersburg but still in the city-Kamennostrovsky is one of several islands-Krestovsky, Vassielievsky, Elagin-that form the archipelago at the mouth where the Neva and its branches empty into the Gulf of Finland.  There are a lot of impressive villas on the islands, several palaces, and lots of dachas where people used to flee the oppressive heat in the summer.  It was on Krestovsky that Yusupov dumped Rasputin's body into the water.

Hi

It's not the palace but The National Library of Russia's Images of St. Petersburg has a
photograph on-line prior to 1917:
