Old Palaces of the Romanovs in Livadia

The large palace that was destroyed so that the new palace of Nicholas and Alex could be built was not the palace where Alexander lll died.  Nicholas' parents prefered to use the Maley Palace which was located nearby.  There was a cross placed on the floor of the corner room where Alexander died.  The palace was destroyed in wwll.

knowing how emotional Marie was, I wonder what her reaction was to Nicholas II telling her that the palace his father died in (and where the infamous "X" marked the spot of his death) would be torn down.

Anyone know anything about this conversation?

If you go in top of this page to read JDA attentively, you will note that the palate was destroyed during the WWII ( 1939-1945 ) and not by Nicolas II.

I'm not sure that is right - I seem to remember that the palace where Alexander III died was destroyed by Nicholas II to build Livadia.  Nicholas detested the palace his father died in becausue it was big and dark.

Again, I could be wrong but I don't think so.

"The local architect, Nikolai Krasnov, was called to design the building (N&A's new palace at Livadia) and only two places were considered too sacred to be changed: the Maly Palace, where Alexander III had died, and the  palace chapel--Krasnov had plans to replace this but the Tsaritsa would not hear of it.  Work began as the imperial yacht sailed from Yalta and Monigetti's palace (the Big Palace) was finally razed to the ground on 3 February 1910."

Yes, Bob is correct, I believe.  

It was at  the small Maly Palace that Alexander III died.

The larger old wood palace was torn down in 1910 to make room for the larger new "White Palace" that is still there today and is in excellent condition.

Many people considered the Maliy palace an ugly one. IMHO it was quite a charming building.

It is very interesting this topic about the Old Palaces in Livadia. I'm wanderig if Premazzi did other watercolours there ( at the Bolshoi/Old Palace). In his Memoirs [/i] King Carol Ist of Roumania ( then only prince) wrote about the visit he paid to Alexander II and Maria Aleksandrovna. As residence the had Orienda palace but he was all the day at Livadia, for lunch or dinner, or for playing cards. He wrote about the cosy and pleasant Maria Aleksandrovna's rooms in Old palace ( of course). Anyone has photos af those rooms? Please, would you be so kind to share them ?

Actually such pics are pretty rare and possibly one can find out some of them at various State archives. If they only exist.
