Part of the problem is that people get to the counter unprepared, their stuff not ready and this causes backups. I used to be able to ship directly from our office, but after 9/11 it became a hassle to do so and now we have to take everything to the post office. Today I have to go and get stamps for all the remaining envelopes containing ERHJ LXXI, which began mailing on Monday.
When I get to the counter all our packages are ready to go...the staff at our post office always tell me they wish more customers were like us. Customers at the post office tend to be rather nasty. A few months ago I stood in line for about 20 minutes. Behind me was a lady (one of our neighbors) complaining to the lady behind her that "some people bring so much to mail, this is ridiculous!" When I turned around to greet her, she felt extremely embarrassed, so much so, that she left the queue and went away. Hopefully it served her right...
