From a hungarian forum (index.hu), illustration from a print of young Empress Alexandra Feodorovna with Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria during the visit of the Russian Imperial Couple to Austria (1896), image enlarged and edited by me.

A bigger and clearer version of Alix's famous portrait by F.A. von Kaulbach.
It's the best version I was able to find.

From vitassim's liverjournal, painting of Empress Alexandra based in the 1899 photo session. I love the soft colors and touch used for it.

That is a beautiful painting of the Empress. The artist managed to capture her expression perfectly, and the detail is great!

These are all wonderful.   So many details that capture Alexandra.

I would be really grateful if someone could answer this for me.

In Massie's book. "Nicholas and Alexandra" there is a portrait of Alexandra (a photo) ... she is in court dress with a tiara but she only has on one glove.

Does anyone know the reason why she is only wearing one glove?

I'm sure it's not earth-shatteringly important but it did strike me as a little odd.

thank you.

The photo if I recall was one of a series taken when Alexandra was dressed for the ceremony of the opening of the Duma in 1906.  Therefore your question was answered in this post:
http://forum.alexanderpalace.org/index.php?topic=715.msg86590#msg86590.  Essentially, wearing one glove is to enable the wearer to cross themselves with their ungloved hand.  The state opening of the Duma had religious components; you can see Alexandra and Maria Feodorovna standing behind a priest in one photograph of this ceremony and presumably they would have crossed themselves at a point, or points, of the process.

^ Those are lovely!

One of my favourites, Kaulbach 1903.
