Royals who were really in love
« on: January 24, 2010, 08:06:28 PM »
This could be an interesting thread, especially with Valentine's day coming up. Royal matches were almost always arranged by other people, so which matches were good? Which couples really were in love?

Nicholas and Alexandra, obviously! Others?

King Alexander I Obrenovic and Madame/ Queen Draga Maschin (Machine).

Crown-prince Rudolf and Baroness Mary Vetsera.  How interesting, both of female pairs were not blue - blooded, de facto, Royalties, nor Draga or Mary. So we can say that those couples are rare to see.  ;0)

I also believe King Leopold and Queen Astrid of Belgium. We also have several medieval and ancient examples.

Yes they are so in love with each other.

Q Elizabeth II and Prince Consort Philip Mountbatten.
King Carl Gustav and Queen Silvia of Sweden.
King Constantine and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece and Denmark.

Thought not at first in love, one of the most romantinc couples were Alexander III. and Maria Fyodorovna.

'Crown-prince Rudolf and Baroness Mary Vetsera.'

I don't think so. They only knew one another for a matter of weeks. It's rather like Diana and Dodi Fayed.

I agree entirely about Franz Ferdinand and Sophie Chotek, however.

Boris of Bulgaria and Giovanna (Ioanna) also seem to have had a happy mnarriage and family life.

Chotkova (with long ending A) is the right way :) It´s the same difference as Romanov-Romanova. Chotek is male version  ;)

Whatever the correct version of her surname, Sophie and Franz Ferdinand were definitely in love.

And how can we forget Charles and Camilla?

Victoria and Albert too.
I've read in a biography about Queen Victoria [from Reader's Digest] that Albert wasn't so in love with Victoria. I don't know how true that is.

Going further back, Edward I (1272-1307) and Eleanor of Castile were very much in love (and Edward had a happy second marriage with Margaret of France (although he was 40 years older than she was!)

Knowing each other for short time doesn't mean that they weren't 'deeply' in love. I would rather say tat their love was more in passionate way. I mean, just different for of love.

'Crown-prince Rudolf and Baroness Mary Vetsera.'

I have to admit that I don't see Rudolf and Mary Vetsera as romantic at all. In her case I think it was infatuation at best and in his something rather more cynical (I don't buy the conspiracy theories about Mayerling either).

To my mind real love is a long-term thing, and may have to overcome some difficulties and opposition to start with).

So:
Alexander III and Marie Feodorovna

Franz Ferdinand and Sophie

Charles and Camilla

Two couples who seem to have had happy marriages without the difficulties and opposition:
Boris III and Ioanna

Haakon VII and Maud
