Tatiana a greenthumb?
« on: January 26, 2010, 09:39:43 AM »
Hi, I'm just here to post this random piece that I read on some Romanov website (That I have forgotten the name of  ::)):
Tatiana Nikolaevna was an exceptionally good gardener. She thought gardening a peaceful way to pass the time. When asked about this Alexandra Feodorovna simply said that she hoped Tatiana would not get too dirty and that she was to be washed and back indoors in time for dinner.
Is this true? It doesn't really seem like Tatiana...for some reason it reminds me of Maria...

Never heard anything like this before, so I'm skeptical.

So far our only source is "some Romanov website." So no, I wouldn't say it's true just yet.

And why not? Tatiana was known her accuracy and similar characteristics. And thanks to absence of other activities, her character could show in the garden. IMHO the version about that was an exceptionally good gardener is very probable.

All the girls enjoyed the gardening while they were in captivity in Tsarskoe Selo. However we cannot present Tatiana as having green fingers until we trace the source of the information.

I know Ally that all girls worked in the garden. ;)

I once found a photo of what looked like Olga and Tatiana planting trees at some sort of event. Does anyone have that photo?
Perhaps getting a look at T's expression while planting will let us know better how she felt about gardening! :D

It is Olga actually planting the tree, her sisters are behind her. That is - if this is the photo you mean:

Thank you, Ally, that's exactly the photo I meant! :)
I see it was not Tatiana, but Olga...well, maybe Olga was a bit of a greenthumb herself, or maybe she was just required to do it. Who knows?

Tatiana's participation in a great many activities is well documented: swimming, kayaking, bicycling, correspondence, photography, sewing & embroidery, charity work, nursing....

I don't mean to be snarky, but in the absence of a source, this is as probable as saying Tatiana was an exceptionally good cook, or a remarkable clarinetist. With a few exceptions, Romanov fan- and websites are notoriously inaccurate -- and we don't even know the name of the site this supposed information came from. Until we do, Ally is right to treat this anecdote cautiously.

In this instance, it was required for the ceremony. If I recall correctly, there's film footage of each of the girls contributing a shovel full of dirt in turn.

Sorry, but you cannot compare clarinet and garden. Besides, I only think over probability, I do not know whether it is right.

Well, most likely young Grand Duchess worked, and she did indeed, during captivity, but did she like it, or did she do it well, I really don't know. In those 1917 photos, she is the most efficient in working at garden (many photos of her show that).
