I've taken in my university a prerevolutional book on estates in Russia during Catherine's II realm.

The englis palace is quoted and given the fact at the time where the book was published this still stayed there, a picture is include in it,I hope some would appreciate -even if there is so few posts last days-...

I certainly do.
I like to see the facades of palaces, it really shows the different architectural styles.

For anyone interested in the English Palace, Bob has just finished an interesting and lavishly illustrated article on his new Blog.  Plans, maps and rare period photos abound. Take a look:

It was blown up by the Soviets, as it had been very badly damaged by the Germans during the war. Why they demolished it I cannot imagine. The other Palaces were also very badly damaged and they managed to rebuild those. Unless of course if it was just a pile of rubble.
I think this palace is every bit as important architecturally as the Alexander Palace, and another beautiful example of why Quarenghi was so highly regarded as an architect, both during his lifetime, and today.

It really is very sad that this building has been lost. It was magnificent.

Perhaps it was too clean and not ornate enough.

No I dont think so, it was far more elaborate than the Alexandra Palace. The AP was downscaled and is very plain in comparison.

Probably demolished by order of some Stalinist minion with 1 brain cell, and no culture or education !!

It always amazes me how they could have made such a huge effort to save all the others, but just blow this one up !

Now that Russia now has a good inflow of petro dollars, it would be a shame if they continued the policy of neglect.  It would be nice it all the buildings from the Imperial Russian period were rebuild accurately.  Russia has an amazing architectural history that it should be protecting for the future.

As this palace is completely destroyed I do not think it would be rebuilt as the cost would be simply enormous. If they wee going to re-build then I would rather the building used by the IF at Peterhof, as more of that is known by the public, i think? Restore what is standing to its former glory would be a better use of funds.

Well Russia has a massive income from oil.  And the Poles are very good at reconstructing buildings from scratch.
