The Engineers Castle is also called the Mikhaylovskiy Castle, and so your confusion is natural. As mentioned earlier, the Russian Museum on Arts Square is also called the Mikhaylovskiy Palace. The palace we are taking about in this thread is the New Mikhaylovskiy Palace located at Palace Embankment, No. 18.

Pardon my ignorance, but I don't understand the three last photo's posted. The middle one is so much more unadorned than the first and third photo.....could it be a room other than the ballroom? They really are lovely photographs.

The top and bottom photo are of the Ballroom (room number 6 on Gleb's plan of the first floor of the palace). The middle picture is the Banquet Hall (room number 7 on Gleb's plan). I assume the Banquet Hall was used to host large dinners either before or after dances in the ballroom. The Dining Room (number 1 on Gleb's plan) was probably used for smaller private dinner parties.

The other rooms on the plan are:
Room 2: The Crimson Drawing Room
Room 3 The White Drawing Room
Room between 3 and 4: The Small Drawing Room
Room 4: The State Reception Room
Room 5: The Yellow Drawing Room
Room 6: The Ballroom
Room 7: The Banquet Hall
