Who lived in ths palace after the edeath of Grand Duke Michael, was it his son Bimbo?

Does anyone have any info or the interiors, floorplans etc?

I know the Grand duke George Mikhailovich lived there. You can have more details on the time spent in this palace in "Not all vanity", by baroness de Stoeckle. It´s nowadays in very bad shape, with a library in the former ballroom and so on...Your possibilities to see the interiors depend entirely on the mood of the person you find in the vestibule....as always in Russia. The palace was huge, a real city, with several courtyards and two facades, on the Neva and the Millionnaya. The grand duke´s children used to go on bycicle from one room to the other!

Are you referring to the present Russian Musuem?

It was owned by Nicholas Mikhailovich-Bimbo-after his father's death, and several of his family-Serge Mikhailovich, George Mikhailovich-lived there when in the capital.  Once, purely on a whim, I went through the archway from the Millionnaya and sort negotiated my way in to see a bit of it, though not very much, unfortunately-I've love to see more, and floorplans, too.

The present Russian Museum is situated in the neoclassical Michael Palace, built by Carlo Rossi for Grand Duke Michael Pavlovich, son of Emperor Paul; it faced onto Michael Square, just off the Nevsky Prospekt.  The Novo-Mikhailovsky Palace is at No. 18 Palace Embankment on the Neva and was built by architect Andrei Stackenschneider between 1857-1861, in the heavy, Italianate-style Stackenschneider favored, for Grand Duke Michael Nikolaievich.

To me, the Michaels Palace, the russian museum, would have been a much more appropriate place for the winter palace as it would have been set in gardens and would not have opened up onto the street. No wonder Alix thought the place impersonal and refused to live there full time.

Even the future Edward VII said that he found the winter palace strange as it only had a small garden and opened up onto the street.

The imperial bedroom, Nicholas´rooms and Alexandra´s boudoir looked all to the enclosed garden. Only the Empress´ corner drawing room(two windows) and the silver and White drawing rooms looked to the Palace Embarkment.

The first picture is labeled as the Grand Salon and overlooks the Neva.

The second picture is the Grand Ballroom

The last picture with the knotted columns is the former Private Chapel.

Great photos! I love architecture and seen the interior of these palaces and the detailed work all over is quite a visual experience.

The pics on the palace are not anymore available that is a pity,I 've post on the restoration of the Sheremetiev palace on the page on St Petersburg for the G8,what is astonihing is the smilarities beteween the 2 ballrooms,doesn't it?

Perhaps the same architect?

I noticed the confusion on the two Michael palaces.

The Michael Palace was built for Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich and is now the Russian Museum at Arts Square (on Inzhenernay Street). It was built by Carlo Rossi in 1819-1825 and the plans for its restoration are posted above.

The New Michael Place is at Palace Quay, 18 was built in 1857-1861 by A.I.Stackenschneider's for Grand Duke  Mikhail Nikolaevich and I think it became the "House of Scientists" during the soviet era.

This time there is no reason for me to mistaken on this document (that I've always posted on the page on restoration for the G8 )this is for sure the Novo Mikailovo palace,sorry for the misunterpretation Bob,thanks to your explanation it is clearer for me.
