Maybe a great grand uncle. A distant cousin more likely.

I think that is very possible that if they're really related, they must be very distant cousins.

Sissi bavarian family posessed any family connection to the romanovs?

As I know no. They were related to many Royal Houses of that time: the Belgian, the Habsburgs, the Spanish, the Italian Royal Houses (Savoia as well as the Bourbons of the Two Sicilies), and even others more, but I don't remember any direct member of Sissi's family being directly related to Romanovs.

EDITED: By the way, about my previous post, the artist of second image wasn't Einsle, but Dauthage.

Love the hospital picture.

The closest the Wittelsbach ever got to the Romanovs was 1. Grand Duchess Olga Nicholievna (daughter of Nicholas I ) was asked by her father to meet the then Crown Prince Maximilian of Bavaria, at the meeting the proud grand duchess blurted out "You don't expect me to marry such an idiot !". Maximilian's pride was hurt and the Tsar was embarrassed. Fortunately Maximilian was about to find happiness with the beautiful Princess Marie of Prussia. The rude grand duchess was later married off to the crown prince of Wurttemberg.  2. The fragile beauty and gentle manners of Tsarina Marie Alexandrovna (Princess Marie of Hesse-Darmstadt) of Russia attracted the attention of the handsome Swan King Ludwig II of Bavaria. They met at the spa town near Homburg and hit it on at once. The sickly Tsarina was well pleased at the handsome young king and harbored hopes that he would marry her only daughter Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna. However she was alarmed when she realized that she herself was the object of the king's affection and has no desire for her plain daughter. The outraged Tsarina broke it off with the king at once.

But neither father nor son married none of the Romanov Grand Duchesses, these were just plans that didn't function. Any close relative of Empress Sissi was really related to Romanovs. And it isn't Nicholievna but Nicholaievna.

The closest was one archduke that did marry a Russian Grand Duchess was in the Hungarian branch. For many years she was buried in the palace in Budapest. She has since reburied.

Those are great finds, Yelena!

Which Archduke was it that married the Russian GD?

It was archduke Joseph, Palatine of Hungary. He married three times. He first wife was Grand Duchess Alexandra Pavlovna, sister to Nicholas I of Russia.
This archduke was the father of queen Marie Henriette of Belgium among others.

Yes. He had the distinction of the only Hapsburg that married a Romanov.

You are very welcome. I think different religions played a part in not too many cross over marriages. The later Romanovs were very devoted Eastern Orthodox Christians.

I agree with you about the religions. It does sound like that did play a part in not too many cross over marriages.

The only Hapsburg-Romanov bloodline cross on the top of my head is the marriage of Princess Ileana of Romania (her grandmother was a Russian Grand Duchess) and her husband a Hapsburg.

On Sisi, she wasn't very religious since the political situation on this in Bavaria was quite liberal. Her grandmother was Protestant I think.

Oh I see!

So were Sisi's parents religious at all? Or not?
