I believe only Maria's hair curled naturally after it was cut, and the other girls were jealous.

Oh - so did all of their hair have some curl to it (except after it was cut) or just Tatiana's and Maria's?

I think that it was Anastaisa the only one who didn't have a naturally curly hair...Her hair was quite straight.

I read somewhere that  after their illness and their hair was cut, only Marie's  grew back curly. Otherwise it would take some time and length to be able to do anything with it. ....

I think it could have been curled naturally over their head? It could have just been Maria's though...

I was thinking when I saw that birdcage, omg that is Tatiana size!! ;D their hair curled naturally, I believe it was Alix that said that when she described the girls hair in 1917.

anybody got the extract from whenever alix said this? (if it was alix)

I don't remember the extract, but I think it was in a letter to someone.

I took a closer look at this framed photo of Tatiana and realized that it's different from this other one I'd had before:

Two different photos from around the same time? (reminds me of Olga's 16th birthday, with the guys from her regiment.)

These may have been taken on the day Tatiana was named chief of her regiment -- 12 January 1911.

I know the photos you mean. I'm not sure whether they were taken on her 16th birthday or not, because according to Daniel Briere she was given her regiment on 11 July 1909...

Oh - so they got their regiments on their 14th birthday? That would make sense - hair down. Interesting!

Usually they were given their regiments when the were 14 usually on namedays.

Olga- 1909
Tatiana- 1911
Anastasia- 1915

(Maria's is confusing. Following the pattern hers would have been 1913, but she had been Chief of the 9th Dragoons since 1912. Supposedly she got it for her 13th birthday in 1912. She received it at the youngest age of all her sisters.)

What a twist - it's interesting! But Olga and Tatiana were both rather 13 and more than a half year in July of 1909 and January of 1911. (both of them were given there regiment approx. 4 months before their 14th birthday). I'd say that 13 -13, 5 years were 'the lower limit'(leaning towards 14 yrs). for getting their regiments (OTM). Also, the difference between 1909/11/13/15 is 2 years, same as the sisters' ages differences, and all four got them when they were at last 13.

So even though Anastasia didn't turn 14 until after the war, she still got a regiment? Or was that just the scheduled date, but it didn't really happen?

More info on regimental dates from Daniel Briere:

Despite what the Russian caption stating that Maria was Chief of the 9th Dragoons since 1911, my sources say she got this regiment for her 13th birthday, on June 14,1912. If right, she would have received a regiment at a younger age than any of her other sisters :  Olga was named Chief of her 1st regiment, the 3rd Elizavetgradsky Hussars, for her 13th name day  July 11, 1909 as was the case of Tatiana, named Chief of the 8th Voznesensky Lancers on January 12, 1911.  Anastasia got her 148th Kaspiisky Infantry Regiment on December 25, 1915, 3 days after her 14th birthday and name day.
