Now I *think* this is Tatiana holding Ortipo, but I could be wrong...

I would agree that it is probably Tatiana. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Olga's hair is usually parted straight down the middle.....

Also, thank you for the photo--this is the first decent photo I've seen of this side of Olga and Tatiana's bedroom....

You are right about Olga´s hair parting! I am now quite convinced the girl in the picture is indeed Tatiana.

Olga and Tatiana with their grandmother

January 1916. Really happy to see a big version of this one!

Just pay attention on the size difference between Tatiana and her brother! One would say that it is a soldier, not the Heir. Although it is possible that Alexei had stood a bit higher, on the bushes.

If you enlarge the photo you will see that Tatiana is half-sitting on the fence which would also account for the difference in height.  It's hard to see that in the small version.

Is that a cat that Tatiana is holding?

I'm not sure but I don't think it's a cat she's holding. It looks more like a dog to me, so I'll say it's probably Ortipo.

A little small for Ortipo. Possibly one of Ortipo's puppies? I don't remember the date offhand, but Ortipo had a litter sometime in 1915 or 1916, which would be consistent with Tatiana's clothing and hairstyle.

A few thoughts about this, Sarushka. I think it's Ortipo. It certainly looks like her. Her face/muzzle certainly looks like Ortipo's.  It's not a long time in a female dog's life between immaturity and ability to breed. And Ortipo never was too big. Plus, what other  French bulldog would Tatiana have in her lap in those years? One of her puppies perhaps, but the indications add up to Ortipo.
