As far as I know in Russia, it is quite normal to go swimming completely naked.

I can't say for sure but I think this is Dmitri Pavlovich not Igor. It's hard to say, because his face is blurred.

And not just in Russia! Although not a nudist or naturist on land, I'm a fiend for skinny dipping. This summer I indulged in it many times on my long, sweaty bike trip to and from work (this Siberian winter was preceded by a truly tropical summer!), in the Fjord of Hafrsfjord, where King Harald the Fairhaired defeated the petty kings and united all Norway into one kingdom in 872.
I reckon I shocked a few tourist busses with puritan cruise tourists going by on the road to visit the Millennium Monument to the Battle in Hafrsfjord. :-)

To be fair one of my best swims ever was in swimming shorts, in the Lake Alpsee underneath the windows of Mad Ludwig II of Bavaria's Neuschwanstein.

I never knew Igor was born in 1894! From the picture of them swimming naked, he looks about the same age as Aleksey.

Nude swimming used to be quite normal in Britain for men up to about the 1920s, but strictly in men-only environments. The reason swimming costumes came in was that ladies started going swimming as well.

However, British men tended not to have their pictures taken while doing it.

Nowadays nude swimming and nudity in general  is a minority thing here, though not necessarily elsewhere. I was in Potsdam a few years ago wandering between palaces and came upon various people sunbathing in what from a distance appeared to be flesh-coloured swimming costumes. I was quickly covered in confusion when I realised that there weren't any swimming costumes. I did fancy a swim in one of the lakes, but didn't have the nerve to go native!

For me, Igor looks a bit older than Alexei but it is quite a surprise for me too that Igor was born in 1894. I thought he was the same age as Maria.

In Germany there are special beach sections or other areas where it is permitted to be naked. We call that "Freikörperkultur" short FKK. I think the best translation for that is "naturism" or "nudism". Like in Britain they don't want to have pictures taken while doing it. ;-) I think people in Russia have a completely different attitude towards nudity. But I'm surprised that you saw naked people in Potsdam. That must have been an unusual sight. :-)

 This time Alexei is wearing his swimming suit. You may be write Dust_of_History that it may be Dimitri the reason why I thought it was Igor was because the book said it was.
