Wow, Maria Sisi, where did you find that photo of Olga, Maria , and George Mountbatten? A true rare photo! And though this an Olga photo thread, I'm most struck by the Maria/Mountbatten linking. In view of George's brother Louis ("Dickie")'s great infatuation for Marie, you have to wonder about him .Could he have been there taking this photo? At a minimum he would love to have been in his brother's place beside her. Louis , I think, didn't see her after an age  when we she was much younger than she appears here, which looks to be at least sixteen, maybe 17 years old (1915/1916). George appears to be some sort of junior naval cadet or very young officer. In any case ,Maria is here even more beautiful and blossoming than when Dickie became "crackers for her" as I think he once put it.

In this regard, is there a date and place for this photo? It's kind of important, because it's likely during early wartime unless Marie is younger than 15 (unlikely)) and couldn't have therefore been in Germany, a possibility for pre-July,1914.

Btw, in seeing the name Mountbatten, and even the male's face, I at first thought it was young Louis.

But again, just wonderful photo and discovery, Maria Sisi!

The photo came from this site

http://www.prlib.ru/elfapps/silverlightphotoviewer/default.aspx?DocUNC_ID=2306&lang=ru-RU#96

I didn't see any date or location on the site but with further research I also found it linked on Wikipedia and says it was taken on the beach of the Lower dacha in Peterhof, 1915

Ah, that makes perfect sense. The year and the young people's ages correspond and  the locale works too: within Russia and also accessible to the Royal Navy.

IMHO, the best photos' confirmations on regarding place/date would come from diary entries.

Nicholas II mentions 'Georgie' visiting them during July (precisely - on 10th, 13th,14th, 15th, 18th) of 1914 in his diary (at Peterhof), when those photos were most likely taken. ;-)

This photoshop has been floating around the internet for years and confusing people, but now somebody has invented a ridiculous story about it:

"Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna of Russia, the eldest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra. She was going to be painted by Laszlo, this picture was in hands of Laszlo in London when she was murdered by the Bolsheviks with her entire family."

Wonder how they came up with that...

LOL I made that picture years ago... I guess it was a good job. But it is irritating to see people claiming it to be some rare original.

That someone is, sadly, not the only one. Just recently I found out that one of Czech magazines used two of my coloured images of the Romanovs for their front cover and inset illustration. They did not bother to inform me. I learned to take these thing (because they happen all the time) in my stride, but it still makes me angry.

What does that Cyrillic word in the right hand upper corner say? Either in English or transliterated?
