Is that Alexei looking through the telescope?

I don't think so. The boy doesn't look to be 7-8 to me. He is too young IMO. And his outfit also hardly matches to Aleksei's.

Could it be one of the Hessian cousins?

Yes, could that be Grand Duke Ludwig of Hesse? It seems that two families met at Livadia in 1912.

Highly likely. Olga's affectionate touch supports this . And though the view of him is not totally clear, he looks like her cousin Ludwig (who in his way looks like his father, Olga's uncle Ernie).

Wonderful!

It looks like Olga is wearing the same outfit as in this photo:

Could it be 1913 in the autumn?

Is it safe to assume these pictures were taken around the same time? The one with Olga & Tatiana together looks like they're in mourning. But whose funeral would have taken place in the fall of 1913? None of their Russian relatives died around this time if memory serves.

Obviously the one with Olga on the bench with Anastasia (great photo too I might add!) had to at least have been another day. AN isn't dressed in black and Olga is wearing that white undershirt which helps differentiate it from the photo with Tatiana.

Is Anastasia the awkward younger sister in photo of reply 814 or what? Classic.

The Tsar with his 4 daughter went to Sebastopol the 3 April 1912 to meet the Hessian Family. Could be that day.

Wonderful picture in reply 814!!

About this old one with Tatiana and Olga perhaps mourning: no relatives died in autumn 1913, but when they were in Livadia died Dediulin, an aide-de-camp of the Tsar. It was the 26 october, and a requiem immediately took place. Then the 29 the family assisted at the funerals. It is only a guess of mine!

I agree the large pair are in  mourning and Olga mentions wearing  mourning in her 1913 diary...( I forget the date) I also think she's in  mourning in the newer photos taken in the AP window.,. ( perhaps trying it out?  They liked to take photos of  landmarks)  but the photo here of sewing looks like simply a dark coat . When we say no relatives passed at a certain time...well they had alot of them lol .

Between relatives and people close to their imperial circle it stands to reason that they could have been wearing black every other week. Which I certainly don't think they were, so naturally they had their pick their spots. Who to mourn and who not to, at least in terms of their selection of attire.

I agree.  Anastasia oftentimes reminds me of her Aunt Olga.  The two can be downright unlady-like in the way they sit with their legs awkwardly apart, as if they couldn't care less.
