Who is ”old Jack”?

I guess the mystery is now solved. Irene would have been Moretta's sister in law?

I took time but was worth the wait.

  Just a brief follow-up to this item that was under discussion.  It was purchased for VERY minimal $US by a family member and has gone into our private collection, along with with documentation on this topic from here on the Forum.  I expect that it would be decades before it appears again on the open market.                                                                                                                               Regards,   AP.

Just to say that in a batch of my latest archival material from GARF I found the following 5 greeting cards to Alix from Moretta.  The file was mistakenly marked as 5 letters from Queen Victoria of Sweden, so I was quite surprised when I found the file contained 5 postcards from Morreta who sighed her name as "Old Jack."

I haven't followed the thread on "Old Jack" for sometime so this may be old information, but I did want to share it with everyone as we all worked hard and long on identifying "Old Jack."

That postcard is my very favorite photo of Alexandra. Has there ever been any record of how "Moretta" morphed into "Old Jack?"

The theory that it might have been Moretta seems the most plausible. Then again, as has been observed above, 'Jack' could have been anybody's nickname.   C.S. Lewis (Clive Staples Lewis) began to call himself 'Jack' when he was about four years of age, and the name stuck amongst his intimates for the rest of his life. I agree, however, with those who say that the card has an affectionately homely tone, which the Tsaritsa would have been unlikely to use with anyone whom she did not know well. Especially, I think, given her Victorian mores, she would not have used it for a man whom she knew only socially.
