Does anyone know if it is possible to rent an apartment for the summer in Tsarskoe Selo? If so how much would it cost?

Of course it's possible, but there are different factors like place, proximity to palaces and parks, house area and so on. And of course price depends on these factors. It can be 1500$ per month or for example 10000$ per month (two-storey mansion somewhere around near Catherine palace). But the average price for a good apartment will be around 1500-2000$ per month.

Naslednik, I doubt whether the Tsars spoke Finnish but they were in contact with Lutheran Finns. There is the painting of the Church Parade of the Life-Guard Finland Regiment in Tsarskoe Selo Manage in 1906.
Aside of its name, the Life-Guard Finlyandsky Regiment had no relation to either Finland or Finns. Its ethnic composition wasn't different from other Guards infantry units - i.e. predominantly Russian. The regiment's church and chaplains were Russian Orthodox, not Lutheran.

I see from the regiment's French and Russian Wikipedia pages that when it was formed, during the Napoleonic Wars, it consisted of Finnish peasants from the neighbourhood of the imperial estates of Gatchina, Oranienbaum, Krasnoe and Strelna. Is that correct, and did that perhaps change during the regiment's 100+ years of history?

Fyodor, you are almost right and this is absolutely correct about the first years of Regiment. But you've missed one important word - "low rank". Of course in Regiment's first years a lot of different NCO, soldiers and so on, were staffed mainly among nearby Finns. But all of the Officers of all ranks even in the first years were nearly almost Russian (by the Russian I mean not ethnicity, but citizenship). Later, starting from the second half of 19th century all the staff was consisted mainly almost entirely of Russians (Russians, Germans, Baltic Germans and other typical Imperial Russian ethnicities).

I've just looked through the list of all Regiments commanders during it's history and there are no Finns there;). Typical Imperial Guard's Regiment dislocated in Petersburg, but with Finnish name.

I thought so, Nicolá. I didn't expect any Finnish commanders, as the small Finnish nobility hardly knew Finnish better than the Russians or the Baltic Germans. Perhaps some Finnish nobles may be in there "camouflaging" as Baltic Germans, as they often shared the same Swedish-German names.

But I think it's interesting that in the early 19th century, the area around St. Petersburg still was so Finnish that it made sense to call a local regiment the Finnish Guards, especially considering that it was founded three years before the annexiation of Finland.

Oh, and I see from this amazing post that the guardsmen were selected on the basis of being "small and slim". Doesn't sound like your typical Finn to me.

I was not quite sure where to post this link, so please move it if there is a better location.

While researching some of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna's philanthropic institutions, I came across this site which features links to lots of marvelous pre-Revolutionary postcards of Tsarskoe Selo:

I'm pretty sure there are photos of Grand Duchess Olga and another of the sisters standing before the doorway at the end of the corridor in Photo. #8.  Now if I could just find it.  Meantime, these are fascinating and engrossing pictures.  Thank you so much for posting them.

I wanted to know about the railroad lines in the St Petersburg/Petrograd area in the WW I period so I made a posting on the axis history forum forumaxishistory.com  The Soviet Union at War 1917-1945 and got the following:

www.aroundspb.ru/maps A 2.26 (February 1926) map of then Leningrad now St Petersburg and the surrounding areas that I think might be usefull to some people on this site. its a topographical map in Russian and it looks like there are lots of forested areas around the city. the map includes Tsarskoe Selo.

I also got a 1943 Soviet rail road atlas www.soldat.ru.flives
