With all this talk about trains and tracks I'm reminded that on my train trip from Moscow to Ekaterinburg in July 1997 I was amazed to see that while some of the train car exteriors had the red Russian star at least the same number of cars carried the old imperial double-headed eagle! Wow.Love all your photos--from StP we stopped at the Tsarskoye station but were tired and none of us went to look at it.   :o

Possibly a new site that will be updated on a regular basis:
http://arhive.3dn.ru/photo/1-0-12

The date of this photo of the Egyptian Gate would be interesting to know as it appears the unpaved road surround looks in appearance as during c1910s.

To compare a similar view c1912 of the Imperial Pavilion with Scott's fantastic photograph above:

And another close-up of carriage-entrance which has been bricked up

According to our Russian guide in 1997 the Imperial Family didn't leave for Tobolsk from the Tsarskoe train station. A perpendicular road crosses the tracks just a block or so away from the station and the family were boarded there--possibly to avoid attracting attention to the station which we supposed would be business as usual. Anyway, we were shocked having always thought they would naturally leave from the station but of course it was a secret operation.

All the photos have been such a treat I wish I'd gone inside.

If I recall, one cannot get into the main building through the front entrance. One could climb through the open windows. You can see the foyer ceiling inside the front entrance but you can't then walk into the building. At least I did not.

I wonder what the trains that common travelers took from Tsarskoe Selo to Petersburg actually looked like in 1916. Were these trains set up with compartments and an access corridor on the side, or were they set up more like a regular coach car (one big open cabin with two rows of seats and a central aisle)? Does anybody have pictures?

Looking at all the pictures of train stations in this thread was awesome, but a bit confusing. Is the boarding platform at the public train station in Tsarskoe Selo the one with the metal and glass structure arching overhead, or the one that is open to the sky? I suspect it may be the latter by I'm not sure.

Based on the latest series of archive pictures, I suspect the way one reached the boarding platform was through one of the wood and glass doors in the waiting room, correct?

Thanks again for all the pics!

Alright, looks like I got confused with the Imperial Pavilion. Thanks for the picture of the 1911 public train station. That's what I was looking for. Are there any pictures of the interior??

Neat pictures. However, these all looks like the imperial pavilion. I'm looking for material on the public station.

By the way, the Egyptian Gate is built across from the imperial pavilion or the public train station?

-------------------------------------------

Edit

Never mind, I did find the location of the Egyptian Gate with Google Earth (nowhere near the public station in any case). I'm still trying to get an idea of the general layout inside the public station and inside a typical train car. If anyone can help with this it'd be awesome!

Some of Egypt (Kuzminskiy) Gate Cossack barracks (His Imperial Majesty's Own escort), but the branch railway line was 100 meters. Pictures of the imperial wagon train is on the internet, the stock (one of several) is in Finland at the museum ...

At 16 km to the station is engine museum ... town of Pushkin 23-24 km.
